Nagbabala ang Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sa publiko laban sa mga kumakalat sa merkado na food supplement at herbal na gamot na inaangking ‘gayuma’ o may kakayahang makaakit o makakontrol ng damdamin ng ibang tao. Walang anumang siyentipikong ebidensya na sumusuporta sa ganitong mga pahayag. Ang mga produktong ito rin ay maaaring may mga sangkap o nilalaman na magdudulot ng panganib sa kalusugan ng mga mamimili.

Paalala rin ng FDA na ang mga lehitimong produktong pangkalusugan ay dapat may tamang label na naglalaman ng kumpletong impormasyon tulad ng listahan ng sangkap (ingredients), petsa ng paggawa at expiration date, pangalan at address ng manufacturer, importer o distributor, at iba pang kinakailangang detalye alinsunod sa umiiral na mga labeling requirements.

Pinapayuhan ang publiko na bumili lamang ng mga FDA-registered na produkto at tiyaking beripikado ang mga ito sa pamamagitan ng opisyal na FDA verification portals. Ang pagbebenta at pamamahagi ng mga hindi rehistradong produkto ay maaaring humarap sa kaukulang aksyon alinsunod sa batas at regulasyon.

Ginawa nang mas madali at mabilis ang access ng mga Pilipino sa HIV testing ngayon.

Kung ikukumpara noon, aabot sa pitong araw hanggang tatlong linggo bago malaman ang HIV status ng isang tao sa pamamagitan ng confirmatory test. Ngayon, isang araw lang ang kakailanganin para makuha ang resulta. Maaaring makuha ang HIV confirmatory test sa 168 rHIVda laboratories.

I went to a sari-sari store the other day and saw contraceptive pills like Lady and Trust being sold right next to mosquito coil and diapers.

At first glance, it might seem convenient — but as a health professional, I couldn’t help but feel alarmed.

Contraceptive pills are NOT candy ‼️ They’re not “safe for all” just because they’re available over the counter in some tindahans. These are hormonal medications that affect your entire body — and they are NOT meant to be taken without proper medical guidance and a prescription.

Here’s why self-medicating with birth control pills can be dangerous:

1. 𝙉𝙤𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙥𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙚.
Iba-iba ang pills. Merong progestin-only, meron namang combined estrogen-progestin.
Kung mali ang mapili mo (lalo na kung may health condition ka na ‘di mo pa alam), puwedeng magka breakthrough bleeding, hindi umepekto ang pills, o magka serious side effects.

2. 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔.
Nag-aadjust ang katawan mo sa estrogen at progesterone sa pills — kaya puwedeng tumaas ang risk ng stroke, blood clot, migraine, o high blood pressure, lalo na kung ikaw ay over 35 o naninigarilyo.

3. 𝑵𝒐 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 = 𝒏𝒐 𝒔𝒂𝒇𝒆𝒕𝒚 𝒏𝒆𝒕.
Hindi ito gaya ng vitamins.
Kailangan muna ng screening ng doktor or pharmacist — titingnan kung mataas ang BP mo, kung may history ka ng sakit, or kung bagay ba sa iyo yung formulation. Sa sari-sari store? Wala niyan. Walang counseling, walang assessment.

4. 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒎𝒂𝒚 𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉.
Hindi lang katawan ang naaapektuhan — pati emosyon at isip.
According to recent studies, may ilang babae na nagka-anxiety, mood swings, o kahit depression matapos magsimula ng pills.

5. 𝑰𝒏𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 = 𝒇𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏.
Kung mali ang araw ng pagsimula o kung nakakalimot kang uminom, puwedeng bumaba ang effectiveness ng pill — at magresulta sa hormonal imbalance o unplanned pregnancy.

6. 𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙖𝙬.
Under RA 10918 (Philippine Pharmacy Act), bawal magbenta ng pills sa hindi lisensyadong lugar gaya ng sari-sari store.
Dapat sa FDA-licensed pharmacy lang, at may reseta ng doktor at proper counseling ng pharmacist.

✅ What should you do instead?

✔️ Consult a doctor before starting any contraceptive.
✔️ Buy from licensed pharmacies only.
✔️ Ask a pharmacist to explain how and when to take it properly.
✔️ Be informed. Your health is too important to leave to chance.

𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥.
Birth control isn’t candy. It’s a tool that needs to be handled wisely — with screening, counseling, and monitoring, not impulse-buying.

So no, hindi porket nabibili sa tindahan, safe na. Binalaan na kita 😉
