Hi moms and dads! Narinig niyo na po ba ito sa balita?

There are several learning points here: 👩🏫📝
❓️💡
1. Don't underestimate "minor" surgery risks. Know your surgical team: Who is operating? What's their experience? The what, how and who of anesthesia. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Your child's life is in their hands.

2. For children, a pediatrician's pre-surgical screening is non-negotiable. Hidden conditions can turn a "minor" procedure into a major crisis. Have your child seen by a pediatrician prior to any procedure.

3. In the Philippines, many families hesitate on agreeing to do autopsies, preferring to let their loved ones rest peacefully. However, an autopsy is the best way to uncover how and why a patient died, especially when a death is sudden, unexpected, or the diagnosis remains unclear. Pathologists directly examine the internal organs and tissues, identifying any abnormalities that were not apparent when the patient was still alive. This can reveal an underlying, undiagnosed condition that was the true cause, or show complications from a known illness or treatment. This provides answers for families allowing them to have closure. An autopsy becomes even more critical if a genetic cause is suspected, offering vital information for the health of surviving relatives

4. Last but definitely not the least, to say that the dosage is "20cc" is medically inaccurate. In medicine, especially pediatrics, a "dose" refers to the amount of active drug (e.g., in milligrams or micrograms), not just the volume of liquid or solution.
- Pediatric Dosing is Weight-Based: For a 10-year-old boy (who could weigh anywhere from 25-45 kg), medications are calculated based on his weight. For local infiltration, the typical safe range for Lidocaine is 5 mg/kg, meaning a 10-year-old could receive 100-200mg of Lidocaine, not a specific volume like 20cc. The dose is different for an intravenous injection. If the dose intended for local infiltration was injected into the bloodstream... this could lead to a catastrophe.
- Lidocaine comes in various concentrations (e.g., 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%). A 20cc volume of 0.5% Lidocaine contains 100 mg, while 20cc of 2% Lidocaine contains 400 mg. Without knowing the concentration, "20cc" tells us nothing about the actual drug amount.
- A few of the side effects of Lidocaine is decreased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, and seizure which was reported by the mother of the patient, based on the news reports.
TL;DR 🫡
1. Don't overlook "minor" surgery risks. Always know your surgical team and their experience; ask questions.
2. For kids, a pediatrician's pre-procedure screening is important. Hidden issues can turn a routine procedure into a crisis.
3. Autopsies explain why someone died. They offer crucial answers and closure for families, especially if a genetic cause is suspected.
4. Referring to "20cc" as a "dose" is medically inaccurate and potentially misleading. Without knowing the drug's concentration and the child's exact weight, we cannot determine the actual dosage or assess its safety. This emphasizes the importance of proper medical training and adherence to strict protocols in any procedure involving anesthetics, especially in children.
