FACTS ABOUT GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is a disease that usually occurs when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. The extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve. There are two major types. Open-angle glaucoma, the most common, happens gradually. It is painless and causes no vision changes at first. As the disease progresses, blind spots develop in your peripheral vision. Angle-closure glaucoma is a true emergency requiring immediate medical attention to prevent blindness. Early symptoms include blurred vision, halos, mild headaches or eye pain.

Visit us at the The Medical City South Luzon Eye Center for a comprehensive eye examination to find out if you're at risk of having Glaucoma.

Vision impacts all aspects of life. Women have a higher risk of eye health and vision problems that can affect their quality of life, such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration, than men.

Many eye diseases and conditions can be treated and possibly prevented if detected early. An eye doctor can also diagnose other health problems like high blood pressure and diabetes during a comprehensive eye exam.

However, women often put themselves last when it comes to health care. Let's make eye health a priority as we celebrate National Women's Month.

FACTS ABOUT AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)

AMD occurs when a part of the retina called the macula is damaged. It is a leading cause of vision loss in people 50 years or older. AMD affects the middle part of your vision, in one or both eyes. Symptoms include dark, blurry areas in your central vision; seeing straight lines as wavy or crooked; objects looking smaller than normal; and colors seeming faded.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY?

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects your eye. High blood sugar levels can result in the blockage of tiny blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina of your eye.

In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy often has no symptoms. Symptoms develop when the condition gets worse. These include seeing more and more floaters (spots in your vision), having blurred vision, having vision that changes sometimes from blurry to clear, having poor night vision, having blank or dark areas in your field of vision, noticing colors appear faded or washed out, and losing vision.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

FACTS ABOUT CATARACTS

A cataract is a condition in which the natural lens of your eyes becomes cloudy, causing your vision to be blurry or hazy. The most common cause is aging, which causes normal eye changes after age 40. Vision changes caused by cataracts include blurry vision, seeing double or a ghosted image, extra sensitivity to light, difficulty seeing well at night or needing more light when you read, and seeing bright colors as faded or yellow instead.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information about cataracts.

CONTROLLING MYOPIA IN CHILDREN

Low-dose atropine eye drops may slow the progression of myopia, possibly by keeping the eye from lengthening too much. Peripheral defocus lenses have different areas of focus that correct blurry distance vision while blurring peripheral vision. Having your child spend more time outdoors and limiting screen time on computers or other digital devices can also help control myopia.

Visit the clinic to learn more about myopia control.

PREVENTING MYOPIA PROGRESSION

Too much time spent indoors increases a child’s risk for nearsightedness. Studies show that more time outdoors in natural light reduces a child’s risk. Encouraging your child to spend more time outdoors is an excellent first step to prevent or slow the progression of nearsightedness. Balancing indoor time with outdoor time will benefit your child’s health and wellbeing. Outdoor time protects against nearsightedness and is a good prescription for eye health.

With school back in session, it’s never too late to schedule an eye exam for your child. Request an appointment today to help your child have a bright year ahead.

WHAT IS NEARSIGHTEDNESS (MYOPIA)?

Nearsightedness is an eye focusing disorder in which close objects look clear but distant objects appear blurred. To have clear vision, light rays must travel through your cornea and lens which then bend (refract) the light so it lands on the retina. The retina turns light into signals that travel to your brain and become images. With nearsightedness, the eye does not refract light properly, affecting vision.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on myopia.

WHAT IS DIABETIC RETINOPATHY?

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects your eye. High blood sugar levels can result in the blockage of tiny blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina of your eye. With the blockage cutting off blood supply, your eye attempts to grow new blood vessels which do not develop properly and can leak easily. The damaged blood vessels and abnormal new ones can cause vision loss.

Visit the eye center for a comprehensive eye exam.
