Let's talk all about the vestibular system.
â
The vestibular system is located in the inner ear and helps you detect changes in balance and body orientation. Are you sitting, standing, lying down, upside down, spinning, standing still, etc? It is often referred to as the internal GPS system of your body.â
â
You'll notice a list of seeking behaviors and challenges. These are things to look for in your child's behavior or responses. If you ever have questions about your child's development, talk to their doctor and ask for an Occupational Therapy evaluation. This list is not meant to diagnose in any way; it is for educational purposes only.
â
You may notice that your child seems to "seek" out vestibular input or "avoid" it. You may notice both responses depending on the type of vestibular input. You may also see this referred to as hyper-sensitive (avoiding) or hypo-sensitive (seeking) behaviors. â
Some ways to address vestibular challenges include: â
â
- Using a ball chair or wiggle cushion for seated activities â
- Use movement breaks â
- Jumping on a trampoline â
- Swinging â
- Riding a bike â
- Yoga poses â
- Using a scooter board â
- Sit and spin chairs â
- Rolling down a hill â
- Balance beams or linesâ
- Jumping rope â
