🌀 The Two Hamsters on Wheels

Today, I came across a fascinating experiment.

Two hamsters.
Two identical wheels.

One runs because it wants to.
The other runs because it has to — its wheel is mechanically linked to the first.

Same motion. Same calories. Same speed.
But here’s the catch: only one of them gets healthier.

The voluntary hamster — the one choosing to run — shows all the physiological benefits of exercise.
The forced hamster — dragged along by the other’s effort — experiences stress, inflammation, even negative health effects.

That difference?
Choice.

Neuroscientist Andrew Huberman talks about this study to highlight how the brain and body respond not just to what we do, but how we perceive what we’re doing.
When our actions come from a place of autonomy and purpose, they build us.
When they come from pressure or control, they break us.

It made me think about life, work, relationships, recovery — all of it.

So here’s the question I’m asking myself (and maybe you will too):
👉 Am I running because I want to — or because I’m being directed by someone else’s wheel?
