Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that spreads through contact with contaminated freshwater. Being aware of how it is transmitted is the first step in prevention.
💧 How infection happens:
Schistosomiasis spreads through contaminated freshwater, where parasite larvae enter the body through the skin, develop into worms in the blood vessels, and cause disease when their eggs become trapped in body tissues.
⚠️ Signs and symptoms are mainly caused by the body’s reaction to the parasite eggs.
🩺 Usual signs and symptoms :
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Blood in the stool
👶 In children, schistosomiasis can lead to anemia, poor growth, and learning difficulties.
💼 In adults, chronic infection can reduce the ability to work and may lead to severe complications if untreated.
💊 The good news:
Praziquantel is the recommended treatment for all types of schistosomiasis. It is safe, effective, and affordable. While reinfection is possible, early and repeated treatment, especially in childhood, greatly reduces severe disease and can even reverse its effects.
📢 Awareness saves lives. Protect yourself and your community by avoiding unsafe freshwater and seeking early treatment.
