🧿 Pre-Presbyopic Eye

When Your Eyes Are Older Than Your Age

👁️ What is Pre-Presbyopia?

• Occurs before age 40 – sometimes as early as early 30s
• A silent sign that your eyes are aging faster than you are

🔍 Common Symptoms
• Eye strain during reading
• Difficulty focusing on small or close-up text
• Need for brighter lighting to read
• Occasional headaches after screen time
• Slower adjustment from near to far vision

🧠 Causes & Risk Factors
• Prolonged screen use (phones, tablets, computers)
• Poor lighting conditions
• Eye fatigue from overuse
• Uncorrected refractive errors (like farsightedness)
• Lack of routine eye check-ups

👁️ Why Are My Eyes Red?

Understanding the Causes & When to See an Optometrist

🔴 Common Causes of Red Eyes:
1. Dry Eyes
– Not enough lubrication can cause irritation and redness.
2. Allergies
– Pollen, dust, pet dander, or makeup can trigger redness and itchiness.
3. Infection (Conjunctivitis / “Pink Eye”)
– Caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Highly contagious and may need medical treatment.
4. Eye Strain
– Too much screen time or reading without breaks can lead to red, tired eyes.
5. Contact Lens Overwear
– Sleeping or wearing lenses too long can reduce oxygen to the eyes.
6. Injury or Foreign Object
– Even minor injuries can cause visible redness or serious damage.
7. Glaucoma or Uveitis (More Serious Causes)
– Eye redness with pain, blurred vision, or light sensitivity may signal a more serious eye condition.

👨‍⚕️ Why You Should See an Optometrist
• ✅ Diagnosis: Not all red eyes are the same. An optometrist can help determine the cause.
• ✅ Proper Treatment: Over-the-counter drops aren’t always safe or effective. Some conditions need prescription meds and referral to our partner in eye health, the Ophthalmologist.
• ✅ Prevent Vision Loss: Ignoring symptoms can lead to complications or permanent damage.
• ✅ Peace of Mind: Get expert advice and reassurance about your eye health.

🛑 Don’t Self-Diagnose!

Red eyes could be a sign of something minor — or something serious.
When in doubt, check it out.

👁 August Is Eye Health Awareness Month

Day 3 Tip: Preventing Digital Eye Strain

Prolonged screen time can lead to Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) — a group of eye and vision-related issues caused by computer use. Here are 10 practical ways to protect your eyes from digital strain:

1. Schedule Regular Eye Exams

The most effective way to detect and manage computer-related vision problems is through routine, comprehensive eye check-ups.

2. Optimize Your Lighting

Avoid harsh lighting. Use moderate indoor lighting and block direct sunlight by closing blinds. Position your screen sideways to windows to reduce glare.

3. Control Glare

Reflections on your screen or shiny walls can worsen eye strain. Use an anti-glare screen and consider painting bright walls with a matte finish in softer colors.

4. Upgrade Your Monitor

Switch from outdated CRT screens to modern LCD displays, which are easier on your eyes and have anti-flicker technology.

5. Adjust Your Display Settings

Fine-tune these settings for visual comfort:
• Brightness: Match screen brightness to your surroundings.
• Text Size & Contrast: Use large text with high contrast, like black on white.
• Color Temperature: Reduce blue light by lowering color temperature.

6. Blink Frequently

Blinking keeps your eyes moist, but screen use reduces your blink rate. Make a conscious effort to blink more often.

7. Use the 20-20-20 Rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to reduce focus fatigue.

8. Take Regular Breaks

Step away from your screen often to relax your eyes, and avoid muscle strain in your neck, shoulders, and back.

9. Adjust Your Workstation

Place printed documents on a stand next to your monitor. Use proper lighting and ensure your screen and chair are at eye level to promote better posture.

10. Consider Computer Glasses

Customized computer glasses, especially if you wear contacts or multifocal lenses, can significantly improve comfort and reduce eye strain. Visit your Optometrist for best suitable Eyewear for you.

Day 2 Tip: Protect Your Vision—Manage Your Blood Pressure

A visit to your Clinical Optometrist could help protect your eyes from the damaging effects of hypertension.

Hypertensive retinopathy often develops without symptoms until it’s advanced. That’s why annual comprehensive eye exams are essential—they can detect early warning signs before serious damage occurs.

Early detection plays a vital role in managing hypertension. If left uncontrolled, it can lead to vision loss, blindness, or other serious eye complications.

In severe cases, a hypertensive crisis may occur. When it causes symptoms, it’s considered an emergency that indicates organ damage, including to the eyes. However, not all hypertensive crises cause symptoms—this is known as hypertensive urgency.

Your Optometrist and Ophthalmologist are your primary eye care partners. Working closely with your physician, they help safeguard your vision and overall health.

Day 1 Sight Saving Tip

It’s nice to look good with your beautiful Specs.
It’s worthwhile that you saved on a great deal with unexpensive eyewear.
