Recently actor Ryan Reynolds filmed his colonoscopy live to help destigmatize the procedure, and bring awareness to cancer prevention. During the live procedure doctors found a 'subtle polyp' which without the colonoscopy could have eventually turned into cancer. “This was potentially life-saving for you — I’m not kidding, I’m not being overly dramatic,” the doctor told Reynolds as he showed off images of the tissue. “This is exactly why you do this. You had no symptoms.”

Colonoscopies are recommended for everyone after age 45. Ask many who’ve had a colonoscopy what was worse, the procedure itself or the lead-up to it and you’ll get a lot of votes for the latter. But there are ways to make it more tolerable. Here’s how.
