If you’ve seen ads claiming blue-light glasses will save your eyes from screens, the real story is more nuanced. When you stare at screens all day, you might feel strained, dry, or tired—but research suggests the culprit isn’t blue light damaging your retina so much as simple overuse of your near vision, reduced blinking, and contrast/glare issues. A big review of 17 clinical trials found that blue-light filtering lenses probably do little or nothing to reduce eyestrain or improve vision over regular lenses.

That said, blue light can interfere with your sleep cycle by suppressing melatonin—especially when you use devices late at night. Some people say wearing blue-light glasses in the evening helps them wind down, but the evidence is mixed.

So what’s more effective than buying special glasses? Take regular breaks (say the 20-20-20 rule), reduce screen brightness, use your device’s night or warm color mode after dark, and blink more often. If you already have glasses or want to try blue-light lenses because they feel more comfortable, there’s probably no harm—just don’t expect them to be a cure-all.
