Counting calories has been the default advice for so long that most of us never stopped to question it. If the number is right, everything should follow — or so the thinking goes.

But studies have shown that after 40, it's not about how much you're eating anymore. It's about what you're eating — specifically, whether you're getting enough protein.

Women eating more calories but higher protein have better body composition than those eating fewer calories with lower protein. More lean mass, less fat, stronger physically.

Shifting the focus from calories to protein is the smarter metric for this life stage.
