In many Filipino homes, Peperomia pellucida — better known as pansit-pansitan or ulasimang bato — grows freely in damp corners of the garden, sometimes dismissed as ordinary “damo.”

But overseas? That same humble halamang-gamot is sold as an exotic herb, neatly bundled and priced like a specialty superfood.

In the United States and parts of Canada, fresh bunches can retail for $4–$8 (₱220–₱450), while potted plants marketed as “pepper elder” or “shiny bush” can fetch $10–$25 (₱560–₱1,400) online. In parts of the Middle East, Filipino stores reportedly sell small packs for a few hundred pesos. Not bad for something that casually sprouts beside your sampaguita at home.

CULINARY USES
In Filipino kitchens, pansit-pansitan is commonly eaten fresh as a salad (ensalada style), tossed with tomatoes and onions, or lightly blanched and paired with grilled fish. Its crisp, slightly succulent texture and mildly peppery taste make it a refreshing side dish. Some add it to soups or sauté it briefly to retain its crunch. Abroad, it’s often marketed as a unique tropical green — a farm-to-table conversation starter that feels rare and “exotic.”

HALAMANG-GAMOT
Its real glow-up, however, comes from its reputation in traditional medicine.

Pansit-pansitan has long been used in the Philippines as a natural remedy for gout and arthritis, believed to help reduce uric acid levels. It’s also associated with anti-inflammatory and mild pain-relieving properties in folk practice.

While scientific studies are still ongoing, its long history in local herbal use adds to its appeal in wellness markets abroad.

The irony? What many Filipinos once ignored — or even pulled out as weeds — is being packaged overseas as a premium botanical find. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the value of our local plants — and local knowledge — only gets recognized once it crosses borders.

From backyard abundance to boutique herb, pansit-pansitan proves that one country’s ordinary can be another country’s organic luxury.

Importante nga mahibal‑an:

👉🏻 Dili apil ang Chicken Pox vaccine sa DOH routine immunization sa health center.
👉🏻 Tungod ani, daghan gihapon ang mga bata nga delikadong matakdan, labi na kung naay exposure sa lain nga infected.
👉🏻Airborne ug droplet ang pagtakod—pasabot, dali ra kaayo mosakay sa hangin ug makatakod bisan layo gamay.
