Don’t Worry, Moms & Dads
Bowlegs and Knock-Knees Are Normal!
Many parents get alarmed when they notice their babies or toddlers having bowed legs (genu varum) or knock-knees (genu valgum), but this progression is actually normal and part of a child’s natural growth!
The diagram below shows the typical development of leg alignment:
👶 Newborn – 6 months: Bowlegged (genu varum) is NORMAL
👣 1 year – 7 months: Legs begin to straighten
🧒 2 years – 6 months: Knock-knees (genu valgum) appear — also NORMAL
👦 4 to 6 years: Legs straighten again with normal toeing-out
This is a natural growth pattern as your child learns to stand, balance, and walk. Most children outgrow these leg shapes without any treatment.
✔ No need to worry
✔ No need for braces
✔ No need for special shoes
✔ Just observe and let them grow naturally
However, if the bowing or knock-knees are severe, uneven, or continue beyond age 7, consulting a pediatrician or physical therapist is recommended.
Let your kids grow and explore, their legs are just doing what they’re meant to do.
