𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁-𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱: 𝗔𝗻𝗼 𝗜𝘁𝗼?

Maaaring bisitahin ang 2024 Menu Guide Calendar - Delights for your Heart: Healthy Recipes for Individuals with Hypertension na ginawa ng DOST-FNRI (https://www.fnri.dost.gov.ph/images/images/standardtools/MenuGuideCalendar/MGC-2024.pdf).

𝗜𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗩𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗖?

Vitamin C helps protect children from infections. However, many Filipino kids are not getting enough of it. According to the 2023 DOST-FNRI National Nutrition Survey (NNS), 4 in 5 Filipino school-age children (79.7%) do not meet their daily vitamin C needs, putting them at greater risk of infections and other health concerns.

Children 6 to 9 years old need about 23 to 45 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C per day to meet their daily requirements (PDRI, 2015).

Because of this, DOST-FNRI has developed the Sweetened Calamansi Juice - Vitamin C Enriched.

The release of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which features an inverted food pyramid, sparked debate and confusion among the public and nutrition professionals. While such changes reflect policy priorities in the United States, they also remind us of an important truth: dietary guidelines are only understood and appreciated when they reflect the 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀, and 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 of people to whom these were developed for.

In the Philippines, we have the 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 (𝗗𝗡𝗚) 𝗣𝘆𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗱.

The DNG Pyramid is designed specifically for Filipinos. It reflects Filipino food patterns and uses food items that are familiar, culturally acceptable, and commonly consumed in households.

As nutritional needs change from childhood to adulthood and into older age, the DNG Pyramid translates these needs into simple, practical food choices.

The DNG Pyramid visually shows the daily dietary recommendations by food group, indicating which foods should be eaten more often and in larger amounts, and which should be limited. It is grounded in local evidence and tailored to the nutritional needs of Filipinos across different ages and life stages.

The DNG Pyramid emphasizes four key principles:
🥕 𝗘𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘆𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗱, such as rice and rice products, fruits, vegetables, and other whole, nutrient-rich foods.
🥚 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻-𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 such as fish, meat, eggs, and beans in daily meals.
🧂 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗿, 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘁, 𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘁 to small portions.
💧 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 and 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 every day.

While both the DNG Pyramid and 𝘗𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘺 are official food guides in the Philippines, they serve different but complementary purposes. The DNG Pyramid guides Filipinos on what to eat in a whole day, across meals and snacks. On the other hand, 𝘗𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘺 translates these recommendations into a single, balanced meal, showing the right proportions on a plate.

No matter your age or life stage, there is a DNG Pyramid made for you. Follow the one that fits your needs, and start building healthier eating habits today.
