Jecsons Medical Centerβs newest department in Radiation Oncology houses the Varian Clinac CX, a high-performance Linear Accelerator (LINAC) with sophisticated technology that delivers advanced cancer treatments. It is the first LINAC in Tarlac, and second in Central Luzon. The department offers targeted radiation therapy treatments including Three-dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy (3DCRT) and Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT).
A LINAC produces high energy photons and electrons with high level of accuracy and precision. These photons and electrons pe*****te patient tissues and initiate series of biological events that, if used properly, leads to cancer cell death. External beam radiation therapy is a process that uses LINAC to provide treatments for both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.
With the use of Multi-Leaf Collimators (MLC), LINAC delivers radiation beams that can be modified to conform to the shape of the tumor. In order to deliver these beams with precise and accurate results, state-of-the-art immobilization devices specific to each patient are available. These devices are designed to prevent unnecessary movements, and to avoid day-to-day patient positioning and set-up variation while maintaining patient comfort.
The department also utilizes Siemens 16-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner with a newly installed LAP laser system for patient alignment and virtual simulation. The CT scanner produces high resolution axial images used for tumor localization and identification of critical organs. Based on these images, the amount of radiation necessary to achieve the treatment goal will be calculated using Varian Eclipse Treatment Planning System (TPS). Eclipse is an advanced planning environment using variety of dose algorithms to deliver accurate radiation dose calculations for safe and effective delivery of treatments.
