PATIENT EDUCATION REMINDER: Why You Must Finish Your Antibiotics

Even if you start to feel better, it’s very important to complete your full course of antibiotics exactly as prescribed. Here’s why:

1️⃣ To fully treat your infection

Your symptoms may improve, but some bacteria are still alive. Stopping early allows the infection to come back.

2️⃣ To prevent antibiotic resistance

If you don’t finish your medication, the remaining bacteria can become stronger and learn to resist the antibiotic. This makes future infections harder and more expensive to treat.

3️⃣ To avoid complications

Incomplete treatment can lead to more serious or long-lasting illness.

FAST FACTS ABOUT ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE (AMR)
1. Incomplete doses = stronger bacteria.
Stopping antibiotics early allows surviving bacteria to mutate and become resistant.

2. New antibiotics are rare.
Pharmaceutical companies are producing fewer new antibiotics, while resistance grows — kaya critical ang tamang paggamit.

3. AMR affects everyone — rich or poor, young or old.
Anyone can get an antibiotic-resistant infection. Prevention is key.

4. Pharmacists play a leading role.
Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare professionals in the Philippines and are the first line of defense against misuse.

💊⚕️
Drugs like antibiotics is a double-edged sword. It can heal, yes. But it can also kill. Especially if taken indiscriminately, without doctor's advice. Maybe not right away but eventually. So, do not get hurt or angry when the pharmacist would not give antibiotics without the correct prescription from your doctor.
