📌 OHA & INSULIN – MEDICINES FOR DIABETES

🍽️ OHA (Oral Hypoglycemic Agents)

These are diabetes pills taken by mouth.

They help lower blood sugar by making your body use insulin better or helping your pancreas release more insulin.

👉 Tips for OHA Users:
✔️ Take it at the same time every day.
✔️ Do not skip meals to avoid “low sugar.”
✔️ Watch for signs of low blood sugar: dizziness, sweating, shaking.
✔️ Check your blood sugar regularly.

---

💉 INSULIN

This is a medicine you inject to control blood sugar.

Needed if pills are not enough or in Type 1 Diabetes.

👉 Tips for Insulin Users:
✔️ Inject in the right spots: arms, thighs, belly (rotate sites).
✔️ Store properly: unopened insulin in the fridge, opened vials/pens at room temperature (not too hot).
✔️ Never freeze.
✔️ Check expiry before use.
✔️ Watch for low sugar signs: sweating, fast heartbeat, confusion.

---

❤️ REMEMBER: Diabetes medicines work best when you also eat healthy, exercise, and monitor your sugar levels regularly.

✔️ Respiratory infections (pneumonia, sinusitis, bronchitis)
✔️ Urinary tract infections
✔️ Skin & soft tissue infections
✔️ Dental infections

⚠️ Important Reminders:
🔹 Take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
🔹 Always finish the full course (even if you feel better).
🔹 Take it with food to reduce stomach upset.
🔹 Do not share your antibiotics with others.
🔹 Not effective for colds, flu, or viral infections.

💡 Side Effects to Watch For:
✔️ Diarrhea (common but usually mild)
✔️ Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
✔️ Skin rash or allergic reaction (seek medical help if severe)

✅ DID YOU KNOW?
LOPERAMIDE (COMMONLY KNOWN AS DIATABS OR IMODIUM) IS A MEDICINE USED TO HELP CONTROL SUDDEN DIARRHEA.

💊 HOW IT WORKS

Slows down movement in the intestines

Allows more water to be absorbed, making stools firmer

⚠️ WHEN TO USE
✔️ For sudden (acute) diarrhea
✔️ For traveler’s diarrhea
✔️ Sometimes for chronic diarrhea (under doctor’s advice)

🚫 DO NOT USE IF:

You have diarrhea with fever or blood in stools

Diarrhea caused by bacterial infection (like food poisoning)

Diarrhea after taking antibiotics (C. diff infection)

In children under 12 years old without doctor’s advice

🔎 IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Stay hydrated with ORS (oral rehydration solution)

Take only the prescribed dose (too much can cause heart problems)

If diarrhea lasts more than 2 days, see a doctor

💡 TAKEAWAY:
Loperamide helps control diarrhea symptoms, but it doesn’t cure the cause. Always watch out for warning signs (fever, blood, dehydration) and seek medical care if needed.

💊 THINKING OF USING PREDNISONE OR DEXAMETHASONE TO GAIN WEIGHT? THINK AGAIN!

Some people use these steroids to “fatten up,” but what they really get is swelling (edema) — not healthy weight gain.

⚠️ Long-term use can also lead to:

High blood pressure

Diabetes

Weak bones

Infections

✅ Healthy weight gain comes from proper diet and exercise, NOT steroids!

💊 DRUG SPOTLIGHT: METFORMIN
(Commonly used for Type 2 Diabetes)

WHAT IT DOES:
Metformin helps lower blood sugar levels by improving how your body handles insulin.

HOW TO TAKE IT:

Usually taken once or twice daily with meals.

Swallow whole, don’t crush or chew.

Take at the same time each day to keep blood sugar steady.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:

Upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea (often improves over time)

Metallic taste in mouth

Rarely, a serious condition called lactic acidosis (seek urgent medical care if you feel weak, very tired, or have trouble breathing)

IMPORTANT TIPS:
✅ Monitor blood sugar regularly.
✅ Maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine.
✅ Don’t skip doses, even if you feel well.
✅ Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
✅ Avoid excessive alcohol—it increases risk of side effects.

REMEMBER:
Metformin is a maintenance medication, not a cure. Consistent use + lifestyle changes = better blood sugar control and long-term health.
