Butuan City continues to prove itself as a center of excellence in education, earning the trust of international partner schools to send their students for meaningful learning experiences.

This was highlighted during the courtesy call with Mayor Law Fortun of the Philippine Science High School–Caraga, led by Campus Director Engr. Ramil Sanchez.
During the meeting, PSHS–Caraga informed Mayor Law of the upcoming visit of 15 students and 2 faculty members from Wu-Ling Senior High School in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, who will visit the campus this February to experience school life, explore tourism sites in the province, conduct environmental scanning, participate in cultural immersion, and even attend the Junior-Senior Prom.

Mayor Law has entrusted the City Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department to coordinate and host a reception for the Taiwanese delegation, ensuring a meaningful and memorable experience during their stay in Butuan City.

Protecting the Source of Life: Observing Watershed Consciousness Week 2026

Protecting Butuan City’s watersheds is vital to ensuring clean water, food security, and sustainable livelihoods for present and future generations.

In line with this commitment, the City Government of Butuan will observe Watershed Consciousness Week 2026 from January 19 to 23, pursuant to the Revised Watershed Code of Butuan City.

The observance emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the city’s watersheds, particularly the Taguibo Watershed, which remains in good condition but requires continuous protection through proper waste disposal, regular clean-up initiatives, and forest conservation.

A series of activities has been prepared to raise awareness and encourage public participation, in collaboration with the City Environment and Natural Resources Department (CENRD) and various offices and partner agencies:

January 19 – Mass and Kick-off Program

January 20 – Water Quality Monitoring

January 21 – Nurturing Day

January 22 – Citywide Clean-up Drive (All 86 Barangays)

January 23 – Tree-Planting Activity

Watershed Consciousness Week serves as a reminder that protecting our watersheds is a shared responsibility and a cornerstone of Butuan City’s health, growth, and sustainable future.

Focusing on the needs of those who require assistance the most, Mayor Law Fortun called for the creation of a barangay clustering among the city’s 86 barangays to ensure that concerns are heard, prioritized, and translated into concrete action. This initiative marks a significant step toward giving focused attention to barangays and promoting responsive, people-centered governance.

Four clusters were formed for rural, urbanizing, and urban barangays. Through open dialogue and direct consultation, priority issues were clearly identified, enabling the city to develop an actionable roadmap to address urgent needs promptly.

Presided over by Hon. Gemma Tabada and assisted by Department Heads as Cluster Heads, the meetings allow Punong Barangays to present their community needs, which are reviewed, addressed at the Department Level, and prioritized—ensuring that the people’s voices are heard and their most urgent needs met.

AgriBoost creates a direct and reliable link between local farmers and the community, helping improve farmers’ incomes while ensuring residents have regular access to fresh, affordable, and locally sourced produce. By providing a steady market for agricultural goods, the initiative strengthens food security and encourages sustainable farming practices.

Through its regular delivery schedule, AgriBoost makes fresh farm products more accessible and convenient for consumers, while giving farmers consistent opportunities to sell their harvests. This dependable system reduces waste, supports livelihoods, and builds trust between producers and buyers.

Overall, AgriBoost reflects the City’s commitment to empowering farmers, strengthening the local agricultural economy, and fostering a sustainable community where growth and development begin at the grassroots level.

This milestone strengthens access to quality, people-centered primary health care for residents, particularly those in previously underserved areas, and reflects Mayor Law Fortun’s continued commitment to ensuring that vital health services are within reach of every community.

A total of 30 affected families received their third round of grocery assistance from the Butuan City Government.

These families are among those affected by a fire that struck several barangays in Butuan City last December, displacing households and significantly impacting their homes, livelihoods, and sense of security.

To this day, support has continued, with relief provisions already distributed to affected households. The City Social Welfare and Development Department (CSWDD) remains present and responsive, extending assistance to 8 families from Baan Riverside, 16 families from Barangay Holy Redeemer, and families from Barangays Los Angeles, Libertad, and J.P. Rizal.

Beyond immediate relief, there is an ongoing commitment to help families recover, rebuild, and move forward together—serving as a reminder that healing takes time and that standing with one another truly matters.
