Lab tests: Are they necessary? what about the additional cost?
Laboratory tests are an important part of diagnosis. Lab tests like CBC, stool exam, Urinalysis, serum chemistry are needed to help the doctor know what is wrong with your pet. Animals cannot speak and many diseases have similar clinical signs. Also, sometimes, the only sign that you observe is that the animal is not eating. So in order for us vets to make the RIGHT TREATMENT, we need to know what is wrong and lab tests can be of great help.
What information can we get from Lab tests?
Doctors and vets can get a lot of information from lab tests.CBC, for example, can give information such as if your dog is anemic, or has an infection. Serum chemistry can tell us if your pet has liver and/or kidney disease, and many more. Stool exam will tell us on what kind of worms your dog has and will give us an idea of what type of dewormer to use.It will also check for presence of protozoa, including coccidia which can cause diarrhea to your pet. Urine tests can give us a lot of information about how your pet's kidneys are functioning and if he/she has some crystals in his urine (which can later form into kidney, bladder, or urinary stones. There is so much information your vet can use to know what is wrong with your pet and it can help him/her in making a treatment plan.
How about the additional cost?
Many owners complain about the additional cost from Lab tests but what they do not realize is that Lab testing detects many diseases EVEN BEFORE clinical signs are seen saving them money for treatment costs and when the disease worsens. Also, without lab tests, your vet would just be shooting arrows without knowing the target. This will result in Ineffective treatment, longer recovery, buying medicines that will not help your pet, and more doctor visits which means more expenses (more money LOST). And the biggest COST of not refusing to do Lab tests is that your Pet might lose his/her life because of inappropriate treatment.
So the next time you bring your vet to the vet for a check up, please do not refuse having him/her subjected to.necessary diagnostic or lab tests. By doing so, you do not only save your pet but also save money.
