San Pedro Academy-Recoletos (SPAR) successfully conducted an Earthquake and Fire Drill on Friday, March 6, 2026, in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) โ€“ Valencia and the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO).

The activity aimed to equip students, teachers, and staff with the knowledge and practical skills needed during emergencies such as earthquakes and fires. Participants were oriented on the proper safety procedures, evacuation plans, and the correct use of fire extinguishers.

Personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection โ€“ Valencia, namely FO3 Raymond V. Basa, FO1 Llorence L. Pactol, and FO2 Rene P. Buling, conducted demonstrations on fire safety, the chemistry and classes of fire, the proper use of fire extinguishers, and fire extinguishment theories.

Meanwhile, the LDRRMO officers, led by Engr. Edgar Pastosa, together with Jeri F. Tabuniar, Arlene Pastias, Brepel Bolotaolo, Charlene Barandog, and their team, facilitated the earthquake response training and evacuation simulation. Students practiced the โ€œDuck, Cover, and Holdโ€ technique before safely evacuating to the designated assembly area.

The drill allowed the entire school community to experience a realistic emergency simulation, helping them become more prepared and confident in responding to disasters.

School administrators expressed their gratitude to the Bureau of Fire Protection โ€“ Valencia and the LDRRMO officers for their support and commitment to promoting safety awareness and disaster preparedness among the students of SPAR.

The successful drill emphasized the importance of preparedness, coordination, and quick response in ensuring the safety of everyone during unexpected emergencies. FUERZA SPA-R!

READ | DILG to LGUs: Prepare flood and landslide-prone areas ahead of TS โ€œBasyangโ€

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) urged identified high-risk local government units (LGUs) in flood and landslide-prone barangays on Thursday to implement disaster preparedness measures as Tropical Storm (TS) โ€œBasyangโ€ accelerates and moves closer towards the east of Mindanao.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), TS Basyang is estimated to be at 195 km East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur (as of 3:00 PM, Feb. 5, 2026) and is expected to make landfall over parts of Mindanao on Friday dawn, traverse portions of the Visayas, and pass near or over Palawan over the next few days.

In its latest guidance, the DILG called on LGUs to monitor the rapid increase of floodwater in active river systems of identified flood-prone barangays; enforce pre-emptive/mandatory evacuation protocols for barangays situated at the foot of gullies or creeks or in areas demonstrating active slope movement; and alert residents living near streams to be vigilant against rain-induced landslides.

The DILG also encouraged Punong Barangays to activate barangay-level preparedness mechanisms in accordance with the โ€œL!STO si KaPโ€ guide and carry out critical readiness actions in close coordination with their respective City or Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO).

According to the DILG, Provincial and City/Municipal local governments may temporarily close roads to all forms of vehicles until affected barangays are deemed safe.

In response to President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.โ€™s call for disaster-resilient communities, the DILG continuously urged concerned LGUs in Mindanao to immediately convene their respective Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (LDRRMCs) and undertake their Pre-Disaster Risk Assessments (PDRA).

SPAR Emergency Response Team Attends to Athlete Injury During Volleyball Championship Round

Valencia, September 20, 2025 โ€” The tension was high and the energy electric during the Championship Round of the 2025 District Volleyball Meet held at the Valencia National High School Gymnasium, as Valencia National High School faced off against Balugo National High School in a tightly contested men's volleyball match.

However, the event took a brief pause at 4:15 PM when 15-year-old Danwill Treb Evangelista, a player from Balugo National High School, sustained an injury on the court. Evangelista, a resident of Purok 6, Balugo, Valencia, suffered a sprain to his left foot during a critical moment in the game.

The SPAR Emergency Response Team (SERT) was quick to respond. Rescuers Matthew Vincent Dales and Savannah Somoza arrived on the scene and promptly assessed the injury. The management implemented followed the standard RICE protocol (Rest, Immobilize, Cold, and Elevate) to address the sprained ankle.

Thanks to the swift action of the responders, Evangelista received immediate care and was safely escorted off the court. While the injury prevented him from finishing the match, team officials confirmed that he is now in stable condition and expected to recover with proper rest and rehabilitation.

The match continued after a short delay, with spectators and fellow players applauding both teams for their sportsmanship and the emergency team for their efficient response.

This incident highlights the importance of having trained medical responders on standby during athletic events, ensuring the safety and well-being of student-athletes in high-stakes competitions.
