I often see therapy ideas and activities shared on social media. Some of them look fun and creative. But not all of them are safe or effective for autistic children.

As a licensed occupational therapist, I always make sure that every activity I do has a clear purpose. Therapy is not just play. It supports development in thinking, movement, emotions, and daily life. When parents follow therapy trends without guidance, children may miss the right support they truly need.

Not all activities you see online are therapy. Real therapy is planned and guided by professionals who understand the childโ€™s strengths and challenges. For me, safety and effectiveness always come first.

When therapy comes from the right professionals, children gain real skills that last. If we depend only on trends, we risk delays and even harm. I believe we must protect every childโ€™s future by choosing therapy that is real, safe, and evidence based.

As a speech and language pathologist, I often meet persistent and loving parents who are eager to put their child in speech/language therapy, but are subtly hesitant when I recommend occupational therapy (OT) simultaneously. Their usual response? โ€œSpeech lang naman ang concern, bakit kailangan pa ng OT?โ€ ๐Ÿ’ญ

โ€ผ๏ธ Hereโ€™s what I try to explain:
A child has to be (1) regulated, (2) engaged, and (3) able to attend before meaningful communication can develop. Thatโ€™s where occupational therapy comes in. It helps build foundations for communication through movement, play, and sensory work that support the brain, which directly support speech and language progress

Think of OT as the โ€œsoilโ€ that speech grows from ๐ŸŒฑ Without it, overall therapy progress may be slow or stalled

Letโ€™s give children what they truly need; not just speech, but the support that helps speech come alive ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ I know it can feel like โ€œextraโ€ work or expense, but when we give them what they truly need, thatโ€™s when the real breakthroughs begin ๐Ÿ’š

By Nurture with OT Nur

As an occupational therapist, I believe strongly that there is no true substitute for occupational therapy. I have seen many families try to find easier or faster ways to help their children. Sometimes, they turn to behavioral therapy alone or put their hopes in playgroups as the main support. While these can have their own value, they cannot take the place of a well-designed occupational therapy program.

Occupational therapy is different because it looks at the whole child โ€” their body, mind, senses, daily living skills, and how they connect with the world around them. It is not just about following instructions or playing in a group. OT builds strong foundations in movement, attention, sensory processing, and independence that set children up for real success.

When children miss out on occupational therapy, it is not just a short-term gap. It can mean lost opportunities for them to develop important life skills, adapt to challenges, and reach higher levels of independence as they grow. Choosing other options instead of OT might seem helpful in the moment, but it can hold children back from reaching their fullest potential.

Behavioral therapy and playgroups have their place, but they do not replace what occupational therapy can do. If you want your child to build a solid path toward higher functioning and real independence, there is simply no substitute for OT.
