Inadequate consumption of prebiotics—the fiber and resistant starch concentrated in unprocessed plant foods—can cause a disease-promoting imbalance in our gut microbiome.

When we feed our gut flora with fiber, they turn around and feed us right back. The fiber-loving bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids, which can help suppress inflammation and cancer.

Beans and legumes, a category of foods recommended on the Daily Dozen are rich in fiber. For example, 1 cup cooked lentils has 15.6g fiber, 1 cup cooked black beans has 15g fiber, and 1 cup of cooked split peas has 16.3g fiber.

Onions are particularly good for the heart, according to the British Institute of Food Research. This is because onions are high in polyphenol in the form of quercetin. Quercetin is an antioxidant (also found in apples and some other fruits and vegetables), which has beneficial properties for blood vessels by combating chronic inflammation and the thickening of the blood vessels. Inflammation is a major cause of blood vessel clogging. In this way, onions can prevent or possibly reduce atherosclerosis.

Human studies have shown that the inclusion of quercetin in the diet, primarily from onions and apples, reduces the risk of heart attack. High intake of quercetin and other flavonoids from onion and other flavonoid-rich foods has been shown to decrease the risk of atherosclerosis in an epidemiologic study in the United States.

You know, when the pediatrician tells you your kid isn't growing, it's hard not to feel like a failure. I felt SOOOOO bad when this happened to me 🤦‍♀️⁣⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀
But that's how it goes. Problems come up with all kids. It's not because we're failures. They just happen. To all moms. ⁣⁣⠀⠀
Our pediatricians recommended pediasure for M without first asking questions about his diet. It's a medical drink, so it's good in some cases, but food is usually the best first option. ⠀
⁣⠀⠀
A banana milkshake and pediasure are not the same. A banana milkshake is not a "medical food". But it was one of the things that has kept M on his growth curve. And SO much cheaper, more natural, and still has SO many nutrients. Here's the recipe:⁣⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀
2 large bananas⁣⠀⠀
1.5 cups whole milk⁣⠀⠀
1/4 cup natural peanut butter⁣⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀
- blend in blender. Makes about 24 oz (or three 8-oz portions). ⁣⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀
Of course, you know me. I don't actually measure stuff. My real recipe is more like:⁣⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀
2 bananas⁣⠀⠀
pour some milk⁣⠀⠀
glob in 2 biggest globs I could get on the knife⁣⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀
Do you measure stuff for recipes?⁣⠀⠀

Cucumber perfectly cleanses the body and thereby supports the immune system.
Cucumbers are made up of about 95% water, so the body is well hydrated when you eat them. This can help the body to more effectively remove the toxins that pathogenic microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, produce, as well as other toxins. For example, if you have a fever, it can last unnecessarily long if the toxic substances remain in the body, as they can cause inflammation. If you make sure you eat a lot of cucumbers, your body will get rid of those toxic substances faster and the fever will go down on its own.
In addition, cucumbers contain the most vitamins and minerals that the body needs daily. Organic cucumbers are better to eat with the skin because the skin in particular is rich in vitamin C.
