Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. Without insulin, the body cannot properly use glucose (a type of sugar) for energy. This leads to high blood sugar levels, which can cause a range of symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and weight loss. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, but it can occur at any age. It is treated with insulin injections or an insulin pump, as well as a healthy diet and regular physical activity.
