Congratulations Pakistan, WHO validates the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem in Pakistan. Bravo to our eye care and health care professionals, who with the support of different national and international organizations made this possible.

Pakistan becomes the 19th country globally to reach this historic milestone.

I was lucky to be part of this team as a trachoma grader and thank you Sightsavers and CBM for providing us international opportunities.

انویٹ (Inuit) قوم کے قدیم برفانی "چشمے" - برف کی چمک سے بچاؤ کی قدیم تکنیک

قطب شمالی کے منجمد علاقوں میں رہنے والی انویٹ قوم نے اپنی بقا کے لیے قدرت کے ساتھ ہم آہنگی کے اصولوں پر مبنی بہت سی تخلیقی ایجادات کیں۔ ان میں سے ایک نمایاں ایجاد ان کے قدیم برفانی "چشمے" تھے۔ یہ چشمے نہ صرف سادہ اور کارآمد تھے بلکہ انویٹ لوگوں کی فطرت کی گہری سمجھ اور سخت حالات میں زندگی گزارنے کی صلاحیت کا منہ بولتا ثبوت ہیں۔

برفانی اندھے پن کا مسئلہ اور اس کا حل

انویٹ قوم کو اکثر شدید روشنی کے انعکاس کا سامنا کرنا پڑتا تھا جو کہ برف کے وسیع میدانوں میں سورج کی کرنوں سے پیدا ہوتا تھا۔ اس روشنی کی شدت سے "برفانی اندھا پن" (Snow Blindness) کا خطرہ بڑھ جاتا تھا، جس سے آنکھیں متاثر ہو سکتی تھیں۔ اس مسئلے کے حل کے لیے انویٹ لوگوں نے برفانی چشمے ایجاد کیے۔

چشموں کا منفرد ڈیزائن

یہ چشمے عام طور پر ہڈی، خاص طور پر وہیل یا ہرن کی ہڈی، یا پھر سمندری جانوروں کی کھال سے تیار کیے جاتے تھے۔ ان چشموں کا ڈیزائن نہایت سادہ لیکن مؤثر تھا۔ چشمے کی پتلی پٹیوں میں باریک، لمبے اور افقی سوراخ کیے جاتے تھے۔ یہ سوراخ اتنے چھوٹے ہوتے تھے کہ صرف روشنی کی ایک محدود مقدار ہی آنکھوں تک پہنچتی تھی، اور یوں برف کی سطح سے منعکس ہونے والی شدید روشنی سے آنکھوں کو بچایا جا سکتا تھا۔

انویٹ لوگ ان چشموں کو اپنی آنکھوں پر فٹ کر کے باندھ لیتے تھے۔ ان کے باریک سوراخ روشنی کو صرف ایک مخصوص زاویے سے داخل ہونے دیتے تھے، جس سے نہ صرف ان کی نظر بہتر رہتی تھی بلکہ آنکھوں پر پڑنے والے روشنی کے دباؤ کو بھی کم کیا جا سکتا تھا۔ یہ چشمے دیکھنے میں بہت سادہ لگتے تھے لیکن ان کا ڈیزائن انتہائی کارآمد تھا۔

چشموں کی تیاری میں فطرت کے وسائل کا استعمال

انویٹ برفانی چشمے تیار کرنے کے لیے وہی مواد استعمال کرتے تھے جو ان کے اردگرد کی فطرت میں موجود ہوتا تھا۔ مثال کے طور پر، ہرن کی ہڈی یا سمندری جانوروں کی کھال استعمال کی جاتی تھی۔ یہ چشمے نہ صرف انویٹ لوگوں کی فطرت سے ہم آہنگی کو ظاہر کرتے ہیں بلکہ ان کی تخلیقی صلاحیت اور محنت کی بھی عکاسی کرتے ہیں۔

آج کے دور میں قدیم برفانی چشمے

اگرچہ آج جدید دور میں سائنسی ترقی نے ہمیں زیادہ بہتر اور مؤثر چشمے فراہم کیے ہیں، مگر انویٹ قوم کے قدیم برفانی چشمے ہمیں یہ سکھاتے ہیں کہ کیسے انسان نے اپنے ماحول سے ہم آہنگ ہو کر مشکلات کا سامنا کیا اور اپنی بقا کے لیے تخلیقی طریقے اپنائے۔ یہ چشمے آج بھی ہماری تہذیب کی ایک اہم علامت ہیں اور ہمیں ماضی کے انسانوں کی ذہانت اور فطرت کے ساتھ ان کی ہم آہنگی کی یاد دلاتے ہیں۔

SOL is an organisation doing amazing work for the people living in remote higher altitude areas of the world distributing sunglasses which are UV protected. And we are thankful to them for trusting us to be part of this noble cause.

Why are Sunglasses important for people living at higher altitudes?

For individuals living at higher altitudes, choosing sunglasses with 100% UV protection and appropriate lens features, such as polarization, can contribute to maintaining good eye health and preventing potential long-term damage caused by excessive UV exposure.

Sunglasses are important for people living at higher altitudes for several reasons:

1. *Increased UV Radiation:* At higher altitudes, the atmosphere is thinner, allowing for greater pe*******on of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Prolonged exposure to high levels of UV radiation can lead to various eye issues, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and other UV-related disorders. Sunglasses with UV protection help shield the eyes from these harmful rays.

2. *Reduced Atmospheric Filtering:* The atmosphere filters out some UV radiation at lower altitudes. However, as you ascend to higher altitudes, there is less atmospheric filtering, making it essential to wear sunglasses that provide UV protection.

3. *Snow and Glare:* In mountainous regions, snow and reflective surfaces can intensify UV exposure. This can lead to conditions like snow blindness, which is a painful temporary loss of vision due to overexposure to UV rays. Sunglasses with proper UV coating and polarization help reduce glare and protect the eyes in snowy environments.

Shades of love.

Shimshal Valley is a remote and picturesque valley located in the Karakoram Range of Pakistan. Situated in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, it is known for its stunning landscapes, high mountain peaks, and vibrant culture. The valley is home to the Shimshal people, who are known for their resilience and traditional way of life.

The isolation and challenging terrain contribute to the preservation of Shimshal's distinct culture and traditions. In winters the valley is mostly not accessible. Shimshal Valley itself is situated at an elevation of approximately 3,100 meters (10,170 feet) above sea level and living at higher altitudes can expose individuals to increased ultraviolet (UV) radiation, Eye problems can be one of the concerns for people living at higher altitudes. Prolonged exposure to high-altitude conditions, combined with intense sunlight and UV radiation, may contribute to a higher risk of developing conditions such as cataracts or other UV-related eye disorders.

This was the reason we travelled to this remote valley in winters and it was only possible with the help of {SOL THE HIGH-ALTITUDE EYECARE PROJECT}. SOL collects sunglasses worldwide and distributes them in remote high-altitude regions.
