Separation anxiety disorder is a psychological condition characterized by excessive fear or distress when an individual is separated from their attachment figures or familiar environments. It commonly manifests in children, but it can also affect adults.
People with separation anxiety disorder often exhibit a range of symptoms including;
Intense and irrational fears of being separated from loved ones,
Excessive worry about potential harm or danger befalling them.
Persistent nightmares involving separation.
Physical symptoms such as headaches or stomachaches when faced with separation, and an unwillingness to go to school or engage in activities that involve separation.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is commonly used to help individuals identify and challenge their anxious thoughts, learn coping strategies, and gradually confront their fears in a controlled manner. Family therapy may also be beneficial, as it involves the support and involvement of parents or other family members in the treatment process.
