Carrier screening is a vital genetic test that detects inherited genetic disorders before they are passed on. In Pakistan, genetic conditions like β-thalassemia are common around 5–8 % of the population are carriers, meaning millions of people may unknowingly carry disease-causing genes, and about 5,000 children are born with thalassemia major every year. High rates of consanguineous (cousin) marriages seen in 65 % or more of unions increase the risk of inherited disorders across generations. Without wider screening and preventive steps, the number of affected individuals may continue to rise.
