In Sahiwal, informal waste pickers are taking the first steps to become organized cooperatives.

Under the IGES–funded Circular Economy Pilot, AHKF brought communities together for:
♻️ Training 63 participants (43 women, 20 men) on the 5Rs, segregation & recycling enterprises
🤝 Cooperative meetings in Bhutto Nagar & Al Makkah Colony – members drafted their first business models
🏛 Dialogue with the District Labour Officer on social protection gaps for sanitation workers
📚 Hands-on learning like waste sorting & composting to inspire micro-enterprises

These milestones are laying the foundation for community-owned, sustainable waste enterprises that create both livelihoods & cleaner neighborhoods.

Why peri-urban communities?

Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan taught us: cities can’t thrive if their margins are ignored. Places like Dhok Hassu, Kotha Kalan, Orangi, and Bhutto Nagar are not the edges of urban life, they’re the frontline of change.

Here, every small step creates a multiplier effect for the whole city. That’s why AHKF invests in health, education, WEE, and climate resilience where it matters most.

💬 Can cities truly progress if their peri-urban communities are left behind?

Stronger families mean stronger foundations for learning🌱

In our Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program at our Roshan Aaj Academic System (RAAS) Dhok Hassu, 70% of parents joined the recent PTM, celebrating their children’s growth and sharing valuable feedback.

To take this bond further, we’ve introduced the EDUBase Parents App, making fees, attendance, exams, and school updates just a tap away. Parents were thrilled to get started!

Because when parents are empowered, children thrive💛

From sewage and waste… to a clean, safe street 🌱✨

In Bhutto Nagar, Sahiwal, we didn’t just fix a problem, we built a bridge. By helping residents raise their voices and connecting them with local authorities, we turned frustration into action and dignity.

This is what change looks like when communities lead and partnerships make it possible. 💚

From informal work to organized cooperatives, change is underway in Sahiwal♻️✨

Under the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies-funded project, AHKF sat down with local waste pickers to:
👥 Form groups and elect their own leaders
🗺️ Map out waste collection areas
💬 Talk openly about the hurdles they face and how to overcome them

These meetings are the first step toward a community-led circular economy where waste pickers are not invisible, but empowered.

➡️Check how Sahiwal’s waste pickers are shaping their own future.

Together, let’s ensure resilience, dignity, and care for all.
