Combatting a Global Threat: AMR Awareness Week at Kamalia PD Lab! 🐓
@
The Kamalia Poultry Disease Diagnostic Laboratory is joining the global "One Health" effort to tackle Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) by proudly observing World AMR Awareness Week (November 18–24).
This vital campaign is expertly organized by:
Dr. Zahid Ali Tahir SB,
Senior Veterinary Officer, Kamalia Poultry Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.
What is AMR and Why Does it Matter?
AMR is the process where microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites) evolve and no longer respond to the antimicrobial medicines (like antibiotics) designed to kill them. This renders infections increasingly difficult or impossible to treat, posing a catastrophic threat to:
Human Health
Animal Health
Food Security
🔬 The Poultry Sector's Crucial Role (A One Health Priority)
As a key component of the food supply chain, the poultry industry has a direct responsibility in mitigating AMR. Our focus at the Kamalia PD Lab aligns with the "One Health" approach, emphasizing responsible and judicious antimicrobial use.
How Kamalia PD Lab is Leading the Charge:
Accurate Diagnostics: We provide precise diagnosis of poultry diseases to ensure antimicrobials are used only when necessary and based on appropriate Culture & Sensitivity Testing (C&ST) results, preventing blind or inappropriate use.
Healthier Flocks: Promoting biosecurity, vaccination, and good management practices reduces the need for antibiotics in the first place, leading to truly healthier birds.
Safer Food & Consumer Confidence: By reducing the selective pressure for resistance on poultry farms, we help minimize the risk of transmitting drug-resistant bacteria through the food chain to consumers.
Preserving the Power of Medicine: Our actions directly contribute to stewardship—ensuring the medicines we rely on today remain effective for future generations of both people and animals.
Let's all be AMR Champions! Promote biosecurity and commit to responsible antimicrobial use.
Key Changes Made:
More precise AMR definition: Specified that it's the microorganisms that evolve and added Culture & Sensitivity Testing (C&ST) for technical accuracy relevant to a diagnostic lab.
Structured "How We Lead" section: Used specific actions (Diagnostics, Biosecurity, Safer Food) to detail the lab/industry's role.
Stronger language: Used terms like "judicious use," "stewardship," and "selective pressure."
Clear Call to Action: Focused the concluding thought on biosecurity and responsible use.
