This week, in Episode 47 of Bas Paanch Minute, Dr Ayesha Mian explains the science behind generosity and what actually happens in the brain when we give to others.

She addresses why giving feels good, and why helping someone, offering our time, kindness, or a simple gift can lift our mood.

The evidence shows that genuinely motivated acts of giving create what is known as the “helper’s high,” increasing feel good neurochemicals; dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins, while lowering the stress hormone cortisol.

When generosity comes from a place of sincerity and connection, it improves our emotional health, physical wellbeing, and relationships. However, when it comes from social pressure or seeking external validation, it can have the opposite effect.

So, when you next have an opportunity to be generous, take a moment to reflect on your intention. Giving from the heart benefits both the receiver and the giver.

See you next week!

Parenting in a Digital Age | Workplace Wellbeing & Family Support

Synapse recently conducted a session on “Parenting in a Digital Age” with Chevron. The session focused on supporting parents in navigating the psychological, emotional, and relational challenges of raising children in an increasingly digital world, particularly within high-pressure and fast-paced work environments.

The session guided participants through evidence-based frameworks, practical strategies, and applied discussions around screen use, online risks, and digital boundaries. Parents reflected on common points of friction and explored ways to foster emotional safety, trust, and connection at home by shifting from control and conflict toward collaboration, attuned communication, and co-regulation.

The session was led by Dr Aisha Sanober and Farah Aftab, and through a blend of research-informed insights, real-world examples, and structured discussion, it emphasised the importance of parental support as a core component of holistic employee wellbeing, recognising the interconnected roles of family dynamics, emotional regulation, and workplace functioning.

Bas Paanch Minute Episode 46: Stress & Anxiety in the Holiday Season

In this episode of Bas Paanch Minute, Dr Ayesha Mian talks about why holiday stress and anxiety are so common.

The holiday season is often painted as joyful and exciting, but for many people it can also feel overwhelming, stressful, and anxiety provoking. From over packed schedules and financial pressure to social expectations and sensory overload.

She also shares gentle reminders on how we can be more mindful of ourselves and others, set boundaries, plan realistically, and make space for quiet moments.

This season, remember that it's okay to slow down, say no when you need to, and choose connection over perfection.

Be kind to yourself and others, and enjoy it as best you can. 😊

Today, in the spirit of helping you cope with the stresses of the holiday season, we are sharing a throwback to Episode 18 in which Dr Ayesha Mian shed light on two concepts that are often mixed up i.e. "What Is The Difference Between Stress & Anxiety?"

While stress and anxiety may seem very similar, there are actually some distinct differences. A few of the most important ones are:

1. Stress is short-lived in response to a trigger whereas anxiety is longer-lived & may not go away when the trigger ends
2. Stress always has a trigger whereas anxiety may not have any trigger
3. Stress has some physical symptoms like sleeplessness and headaches but is usually accompanied by the sense of wanting to make a change to fix the stressor. However, anxiety symptoms include constant worry, headaches, GI issues, palpitations, panic attacks, and more.

Did you find this clarification about the differences between stress and anxiety helpful? Let us know what other topics you'd like us to cover.

Today, in the 45th episode of Bas Paanch Minute, Ayesha Mian concludes our series on 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝘆 by talking about how intentionally engaging with our communities can play a powerful role in supporting emotional wellbeing.

Much of our happiness comes from our connections with others, from shared purpose, and from feeling part of something bigger than ourselves. To that end, here are five simple community level actions that make you feel a much greater sense of contentment:

𝟣. 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥𝙨
Stay in touch with friends, spend time with family, and reach out instead of waiting for connection to happen on its own.
