Final-year students from the Department of Social Work, University of Karachi, undertook an observational visit to Little Feet to enhance their understanding of Autism Spectrum challenges and the role of social workers in supporting individuals and families affected by neurodevelopmental conditions.

The session was facilitated by Ms. Quratul Ain Shahi, Founder and ABA Therapist at Little Feet, along with her team. Students gained valuable insights into therapeutic interventions, parental psychoeducation, counselling, and awareness practices addressing Autism and ADHD.

This experiential learning opportunity provided students with a deeper appreciation of multidisciplinary approaches and the crucial contribution of social workers in promoting inclusion, advocacy, and support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD.

Financial Planning for the Future of Autistic Individuals in Resource-Limited Settings: Practical Strategies and Realistic Options:

As we all know that several government benefits, special needs trusts, or comprehensive insurance coverage are limited in Pakistan, there are still realistic options for parents to consider. Here are some practical steps for financial planning for the future of autistic children in Pakistan:

1. Seek Support from Local Autism Organizations: Connect with local autism organizations and support groups in Pakistan. These organizations can provide guidance, resources, and support networks to help you navigate the challenges of financial planning and accessing appropriate services for your child.

2. Explore Community-Based Services: Look for community-based services and programs that cater to individuals with autism. These services may include therapy centers, vocational training programs, or educational institutions that provide support and resources for autistic individuals. Assess the affordability and quality of these services to ensure they align with your child's needs and your financial situation.

3. Prioritize Education: Focus on providing your child with access to education that suits their abilities and fosters their development. While specialized autism education programs may be limited in some areas, work with local schools and educators to create an individualized education plan (IEP) that accommodates your child's needs as much as possible. Advocate for inclusive education and reasonable accommodations in mainstream schools.

4. Save and Budget Wisely: Implement a disciplined approach to saving and budgeting for your child's future. Cut unnecessary expenses and allocate funds toward long-term goals. Even small amounts saved consistently over time can make a significant difference. Consider opening a dedicated savings account for your child's future expenses and contribute to it regularly.

5. Engage in Vocational Training: Explore vocational training programs that equip individuals with autism with practical skills for employment. Identify local organizations or initiatives that offer vocational training opportunities and prepare your child for future employment options within their capabilities.

6. Foster Social Connections: Encourage social connections and community involvement for your child. Building relationships within the community can lead to support networks and potential opportunities for your child's future. Engage in local community events and activities that promote inclusivity and acceptance of individuals with special needs.

7. Consider Microfinancing and Entrepreneurship: Investigate microfinancing options or entrepreneurship opportunities for your child's future. Some organizations in Pakistan provide microfinancing to individuals with disabilities to start their own small businesses. Explore entrepreneurship ideas that align with your child's strengths and interests.

8. Plan for Guardianship and Legal Arrangements: Consult with a local attorney to understand the legal requirements for guardianship and establish necessary legal arrangements to protect your child's interests. Make provisions for their ongoing care and decision-making as they transition to adulthood.

9. Explore Skill-Building and Therapy Resources: Seek out skill-building resources and therapy options that are affordable and accessible in your local area. Look for free or low-cost resources, workshops, or training programs that can enhance your child's skills and development.

10. Tap into Family and Community Support: Engage with extended family members, friends, and the community for support. Build a network of individuals who can provide emotional support and potentially assist with financial resources or opportunities for your child's future.

While the specific options may be different in Pakistan compared to other countries, by leveraging available resources, engaging with the community, and making strategic decisions, parents can still plan for their child's future. Adapt and tailor these suggestions to your unique circumstances, and remember that every effort you make can have a positive impact on your child's well-being and future prospects.

We would highly appreciate if you also provide valuable insights and guidance for parents to consider in the comments section.
