Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is a parasitic infection transmitted by triatomine bugs, also called "kissing bugs." It's estimated that over 6 million people worldwide are infected with this neglected disease, mainly in Latin America where it is endemic.
Chagas disease can be difficult to diagnose, as many people may not develop symptoms until years or decades after infection. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, swelling, and in later stages, heart and digestive problems.
Fortunately, Chagas disease can be treated with medication, especially if caught early. But prevention is key: avoiding exposure to triatomine bugs by sleeping in bug-free housing, wearing protective clothing, and using insecticide-treated bed nets can help reduce the risk of infection.
Let's raise awareness about Chagas disease and its impact on millions of people worldwide. Together, we can work towards ending the neglect and improving access to diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. "
