WHAT IS CLUBFOOT? Clubfoot, or Talipes Equinovarus, is a treatable birth defect that affects approximately 150,000-200,000 children (one in a thousand newborns) each year. It is one of the most common congenital deformities diagnosed at birth with the feet twisted inward and downward (Some cases are diagnosed during a routine ultrasound as well). This condition is not painful at birth but when children reach their walking age, an uncorrected clubfoot can make it very painful and difficult for them to walk, if not impossible.http://online.x-plain.com/modules_v3/ortho/op860102/op869102.pdf

TREATMENT: THE PONSETI METHOD

"Parents of infants born with clubfeet may be reassured that their baby, if otherwise normal, when treated by expert hands will have normal looking feet with normal function for all practical purposes. The well treated clubfoot is no handicap and is fully compatible with normal, active life."
_Ignacio Ponseti, M.D. Over fifty years ago, Dr. Ignacio Ponseti developed a Non-Invasive method for treating clubfoot, the now renowned 'Ponseti method'. The Ponseti method consists of using a series of casts, gentle manipulation and a special brace for correcting the shape of the feet. This treatment is 95+% effective and exceptionally cost effective with no known side effects. Treatment should be started soon after birth. WHY NO TO SURGERY? It has been a popular practice of Orthopedic surgeons (to date) to ask parents of a child born with clubfoot deformity to come in after 3 to 6 months and get the clubfoot surgically corrected. This practice is now being discouraged as surgery in the clubfoot is invariably followed by scarring, stiffness and muscle weakness which becomes more severe and disabling after adolescence. Paediatric orthopaedic Society POSPcon2026, April conference @ Quetta, organisers Dr. Aslam Mengal and Dr. Sadam Mazar meeting held at SGOC Karachi on 5.8.2025. The POA President Prof. Masood Umer, Secretary General Prof. Badar Sahito, POSP president Prof. Amin Chinoy, Vice President Dr. Pervez Ali, Dr. Mehtab Pirwani, Prof. Jagdesh, Dr. Asif Perach, Dr. Noman, Dr Gaffar Jamali and PORP registry Director Prof. Anis Bhatti graciously participated and ensured Quetta group for their full support and help to hold Paeds Orthop Conf. at Serena Quetta on 1-4 April 2026. Pre-conference Workshops to be held at Sukkur, Larkana, Quetta and Karachi in november 2025 to February 2026.

Dr. Jose Morcuende (R) is currently visitng Dr. Joel Lerman (L) at Shiners Hospital in Sacramento, CA. During his visit, Dr. Morcuende had a chance to catch up with Bill Ponseti (center), son of pioneer and developer of the Ponseti method, Dr. Ignacio Ponseti. The visit to Shriners Hospital is part of a followup visit courtesy the Neubauer Foundation. The Neubauer Foundation has provided funding for US orthopedic surgeons who are treating clubfoot, the opportunity to visit the clubfoot clinic in Iowa to further enhance their Ponseti method skills.

149th “Ponseti Clubfoot Clinic@ inaugurated at Khairpur Medical College on 07.Feb.2025. The event was organised by Dr. Naveed Solangi, Dr. Dost M Soho & their team of KMC khairpur. The inauguration by Dr. Anis Bhatti, Dr. Asad Mahar and Dr. Zameer Soomro.
Ponseti clinic Inauguration was preceded by Live surgery telecast to lecture hall attended by 150 participants. Surgery with special technique on patient 16 yr aged girl with neglected sever Culbfoot deformity.
Prof. Anis Bhatti performed surgery by “his novel technique” of “ETAL”, Cuboid wedge and (TATT) Tib Ant Tendon Transfer ( no PMR).
The live surgery followed by lecture session by him & his team, Prof. Zamir Soomro / Dr. Rashid Soomro CMCH, Dr. Sijjad Mahar GMMC, Dr. Pervez Ali JPMC, Dr. M Jamil DUHS, Dr. Noman Parekh DUHS. Lectures followed by Live casting on patients, hand on training for Ponseti Casting and by Ortho Faculty of CMCH, KMC, GMCS, GIMS, JIMS. At end POA Regional meeting of difficult case presentations held with Presentations by Prof. Badar Sahito DUHS, trainees and Prof. Asad mahar. The guest faculty also visited Faiz Mahal and met with Prince Mehdi.

Today on 1st February 2025 Maj. Gen. Prof. Sohail Hafeez, CPSP Dean Orthopaedic, Prof. A. Razzak Shaikh Registrar CPSP and myself done inspection of Paed Orthop OPD, Unit & dedicated OR. Also met with Prof. Shahid Rasool Executive director JPMC. Delegation was warmly welcomed by JPMC Orthopaedic team & OR personnels.

3 days Paediatric Orthopaedic Live surgery DDH & Hand on training live Ponseti workshop conducted at Quetta, from 15-17 June 2023 @ Shaikh Zaid hospital & civil hospital karachi. Over 90 participants participated. Ponseti Clubfoit clinic was also opened at Shaikh Zaid Hospital with energetic leadership of Dr. M. Aslam Mengal. Very good academic arrangment and social program managed by Dr. Aslam Mengal and Prof. MB Shahani & their teams.
