We are excited to share our participation in the panel discussion ‘Evidence to action: Preventing Suicides in Youth: Integrating Youth Mental Health into PHC in Low-Resource Settings’ happening at the Brain and Mind (BMI) International Conference 2025 on 5th November 2025 from 04:50 pm to 05:20 pm.

In Pakistan and other low-resource settings, the mental and brain health treatment gap remains wide due to stigma, shortage of professionals, and geographic inaccessibility. In addition, Suicide remains a taboo subject in LMICs, with legal and social barriers hindering help-seeking. However, integrated grassroots models led by communities, educators, and peer supporters are demonstrating strong potential to identify at-risk individuals and enable early intervention. The panel discussion aims to emphasizes the need for decriminalization, increased awareness, and sustainable community-based interventions that make prevention a collective responsibility, focusing on dignity, hope, and evidence-based responses to suicidal distress.

The Brain and Mind (BMI) International Conference 2025 brings together experts, researchers, policymakers, and community leaders to address the pressing issues in brain health and mental health. This year’s conference focuses on reimagining how to build building thriving communities, through promotion of brain health and mental health in the Global South.

In Punjab, only 29.5% of married women use a modern family-planning method, and more than 70% of current users report not receiving adequate counseling (PHPS 2024–25).

To bridge this gap, PHC Global, in collaboration with the Punjab Population & Health Department, the Punjab Family Planning Program (PFPP), and the World Health Organization (WHO), is training 350 private practitioners across Punjab.

The training aims to strengthen clinical and counseling skills of practitioners to ensure delivery of high-quality family planning services. The objective is to increase the modern contraception prevalence rate while educating people about short-acting and long-acting contraceptives to allow informed and voluntary contraceptive choices for clients.

Through interactive role-plays, case studies, and risk-communication exercises, practitioners learned how to listen, inform, and counsel with empathy, turning every conversation into an opportunity for choice and trust.

Did you know that about 50% of adolescent girls are anemic in Pakistan? Benazir Income Support Programme, in collaboration with Nutrition International (NI) and the World Food Program, addressed this public health crisis by introducing weekly iron and folic acid supplements (WIFAS) and creating nutritional awareness among adolescent girls through the Adolescent Nutrition Program in six flood-affected districts of Pakistan.

PHC Global presented their research on the "Process Evaluation of the BISP Adolescent Nutrition Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Pilot in Pakistan" at the dissemination event organized by NI and BISP. This study was conducted under the strategic leadership of Dr. Ali Turab, Director Global Health and the Principal Investigator for this research.

During the dissemination of the study findings, Waffa Ali, DNS, MPH , highlighted that the program was able to increase awareness on nutrition, build a high level of trust in services among program beneficiaries, and provide health benefits from the use of WIFAS. She further discussed the challenges faced in program reach, including a lack of B-form for registration, a farther distance to the facilitation centers resulting in a higher travel cost, discouraging some BISP Kafalat beneficiaries from enrolling into the program.

Additionally, she identified areas for improvement in service implementation and suggested key recommendations to enhance service delivery.

The program holds significant potential to further improve adolescent health and nutrition outcomes across Pakistan.

The process evaluation was conducted in four out of six flood-affected districts, where daughters of BISP Kafalat beneficiaries aged 15 to

We’re proud to share that our Global Health Director, Dr. Ali Turab, was invited by Aga Khan University’s Department of Community Health Sciences to speak at the National Vaccinology Workshop on September 2, 2025, in Lahore.

In his talk, “Innovations in Vaccine Delivery & Future Outlook for Pakistan’s EPI,” Dr. Turab highlighted some advanced technologies like microneedle patches and next-generation platforms that can make vaccines easier to deliver, safer to store, and more accessible for hard-to-reach communities.

He also raised the critical question about the strategic adoption of these innovations in Pakistan while balancing costs, regulations, and system readiness for vaccines to truly reach every child.

At PHC Global, this is the heart of our work. We are dedicated to advancing innovation while keeping equity and sustainability at the core of Pakistan’s Expanded Programme on Immunization.

How do polio campaigns help identify and reach zero-dose children in the most inaccessible communities?

PHC Global with the support of ThinkWell recently shared preliminary findings from its study, "Economic Analysis to Determine the Cost of Reaching Zero-Dose Children through Different Strategies in Pakistan," with Dr. Samra Khurram, Director Health Services (EPI).

Using data from two Polio House-to-House campaigns (Nov 2023 & Oct 2024), the study explored how these campaigns identify children who have never received a single routine vaccine dose.

The early insights from 42 health facilities in two provinces showed that out of all the identified missed children, only 10–19% were true zero-dose, as per Gavi's definition. The remaining identified are those under-immunized and missing their routine schedule.

However, our analysis also highlighted that only half (60% in Nov 2023, 56% in Oct 2024) of identified zero-dose children were reached with routine vaccines within 6 weeks of identification after the polio campaign. This highlights critical gaps in vaccination success rates, health system capacity, and referral systems overall. We also observed some system-level disparities here, when Punjab reached 90% of identified zero-dose children vs. 43% in Sindh.

Through the study, we will further share the cost to identify, reach, and vaccinate one zero-dose child across other national strategies and actionable policy recommendations as an effort to contribute to an effective, equitable, and data-guided immunisation program that ensures no child is left behind.

Our Global Health team at PHC Global had the opportunity to meet Dr. Amanda Palmer, Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University, to brainstorm research ideas and explore potential collaborations for a Vitamin A Fortification Study in Pakistan. We envision cutting-edge research to address the high burden of Vitamin A deficiency, which affects nearly half of preschool-aged children in Pakistan and contributes to preventable blindness, increased risk of infections, and poor growth outcomes.

This research will explore the optimal levels of Vitamin A required for healthy growth, particularly in children, while also deepening our understanding of the role of fortification as a sustainable nutrition intervention. Dr. Palmer’s work focuses on interventions that improve nutrition and protect the health of infants and children in low- and middle-income countries, with a strong emphasis on tackling Vitamin A deficiency.

Stay tuned to learn more about this important work!

PHC Global facilitated the Consultative Meeting on Punjab Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Strategy (MSNS) 2024-2030 Costed Action Plan, organized by the Planning and Development Board, Punjab, and UNICEF. The strategy was rolled out earlier this year, in April, to review the costing of each intervention-related activity across each sector.

Dr. Ali Turab, Director Global Health, presented the approved strategy and the costed action plan alongside his team to gather recommendations from stakeholders. This strategy will bring together diverse stakeholders and the government, addressing the rising burden of malnutrition.

The updated strategy aims to enhance the nutrition-related capacities of all sectors and implementing partners through cross-sectoral coordination. The initiative emphasizes the provision of inclusive and equitable nutrition services at all levels, ensuring that all communities benefit from improved nutrition interventions.

Following our earlier announcement, we’re excited to share more from PHC Global’s participation at the International Health Economics Association (IHEA) 2025 Conference in Bali, where our Director of Global Health, Dr. Syed Muhammad Ali Turab, spoke on a high-level panel addressing zero-dose children and immunization economics.

In a session that brought together global leaders in health financing and equity, Dr. Turab emphasized the urgent need to reimagine immunization systems, not just through innovation, but through contextualized, evidence-driven policy approaches.

Drawing on PHC Global’s field experience and research, the discussion centered on:

Costing and funding flow analysis: Understanding the economics of vaccine delivery at every level of the health system, from procurement to the periphery.

Scaling last-mile innovations: From human-centered design to mobile outreach strategies, PHC Global is piloting models that address persistent inequities in hard-to-reach communities.

Evidence translation for impact: We’re committed to making research actionable — bridging data with decision-making to support more resilient, responsive immunization programs.

As part of the global movement to reach zero-dose children, PHC Global is proud to represent Pakistan by sharing insights from underserved regions where the stakes are highest and the innovations are boldest.

To strength private sector leadership in family planning, Dr. Ali Turab, Director Global Health at PHC Global, and his team met with the Population Council to learn from their experience engaging private providers in family planning and Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) service delivery.

The discussion explored key enablers and challenges from Population Council’s work piloting a total market approach aligning public, private, and NGO sectors to expand access in rural Pakistan through training and supporting private practitioners, building referral and pharmacy linkages, providing high-quality family planning materials and digital tools, and engaging men to shift gendered norms around FP.

These insights will shape our upcoming project with Punjab Family Planning Program (PFPP) to train 350 private practitioners on family planning and SRH, ensuring lessons from evidence-based models inform real-world strategies. We aim to make family planning services more inclusive, coordinated, and accessible for all communities across Pakistan.
