Children don’t grow in silos. And our solutions shouldn’t either.
Early Childhood Development (ECD) is the responsibility of everyone who has to interact with children in any way; parents, caregivers, relatives, teachers, governments, and the community at large.
No single sector can single handedly provide all that is required for ECD. A community led, human centered and multi-sectoral approach is the only way forward.
Realizing the importance of multi-sectoral approach, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Pakistan and SPHERE Consulting designed and implemented a community-led, multisectoral approach to Early Childhood Development (ECD) which brought together health, nutrition, education, agriculture, livestock and social protection services under one coordinated platform in Union Council Kotla Chakar, Multan. Through the leadership of the Union Council Malnutrition Addressing Committee (UMAC), local government representatives, frontline workers and eight local partner organizations came together to jointly plan and deliver support for children aged 0-8 years.
From nutrition sessions and kitchen gardening to early learning spaces and parenting guidance to digital tools and community awareness, families are now accessing integrated support, closer to home. What makes this initiative truly special is its ownership. Instead of outside actors leading, the community leads and we support.
SPHERE hosted a Dissemination Event this week to share learnings from a pilot Early Childhood Development (ECD) initiative implemented in UC Kotla Chakar, District Multan. The pilot was designed to test how locally embedded multisectoral coordination can strengthen ECD outcomes.
We extend our appreciation to the Planning & Development Board, Govt. of the Punjab, and JICA Pakistan, for providing leadership and support for this initiative.
