Public Health Awareness Message
Anemia in Pregnancy
Anemia during pregnancy is a common but potentially serious condition that can affect the health of both mother and baby. It occurs when the hemoglobin level in the blood falls below normal, reducing the body’s ability to carry adequate oxygen to tissues.
If left untreated, anemia may lead to maternal fatigue, increased risk of infections, premature delivery, low birth weight, and complications during childbirth.
Common Types of Anemia in Pregnancy
• Iron Deficiency Anemia – The most common type, caused by increased iron requirement during pregnancy.
• Folate Deficiency Anemia – Due to lack of folic acid, which is essential for red blood cell formation and fetal development.
• Vitamin B12 Deficiency Anemia – Occurs when there is insufficient vitamin B12, affecting red blood cell production and nervous system health.
• Anemia of Chronic Disease – Associated with underlying medical conditions or infections.
Prevention and Care
• Regular antenatal check-ups and hemoglobin monitoring
• Taking iron and folic acid supplements as prescribed
• Consuming iron-rich foods such as green leafy vegetables, beans, lentils, dates, eggs, and meat
• Early medical consultation if symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, breathlessness, or paleness occur
Early diagnosis and timely treatment can ensure a safer pregnancy and a healthier baby.

Public Awareness Message
On World Kidney Day
From the Consultants of Shibra Clinic
On the occasion of World Kidney Day, the Consultants of Shibra Clinic emphasize the importance of maintaining kidney health and recognizing kidney disease at an early stage.
The kidneys are essential organs responsible for removing waste products, maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, and regulating blood pressure. Many kidney diseases develop silently, and patients may remain asymptomatic until significant damage has occurred.
Individuals with diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or a family history of kidney disease are at increased risk and should undergo regular medical evaluation.
To protect kidney health, the consultants at Shibra Clinic advise:
• Maintain strict control of blood pressure and blood sugar
• Ensure adequate hydration with safe drinking water
• Limit excess salt intake
• Avoid unnecessary or prolonged use of painkiller medications
• Maintain a healthy weight and active lifestyle
• Undergo periodic medical screening, particularly if you are at high risk
Early detection and timely management can significantly reduce the risk of chronic kidney disease and its complications.
Take care of your kidneys—your health depends on them.

HYPERCALCEMIA – DIAGNOSIS & MANAGEMENT
Public Health Information
By Dr Rizwan Farooq

Shibra Clinic
What is Hypercalcemia?
Hypercalcemia means high calcium level in blood
(Ca²⁺ >10.2 mg/dL)
Step 1: Check Serum PTH
If PTH is High or High-Normal
PTH-Dependent Hypercalcemia
Check Urinary Calcium
• Low urinary calcium → Familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia
• High urinary calcium → Primary or Tertiary Hyperparathyroidism
If PTH is Low
PTH-Independent Hypercalcemia
Check:
• 25-OH Vitamin D ↑ → Vitamin D toxicity
• 1,25-OH₂ Vitamin D ↑ → Sarcoidosis / Lymphoma
• PTHrP ↑ → Malignancy (Breast cancer, Squamous cell tumors, Ovarian cancer, Renal cancer)
If normal PTHrP, consider:
• Multiple Myeloma
• Immobilization
• Hyperthyroidism
• Vitamin A toxicity
• Acromegaly
• Milk-Alkali syndrome
Treatment Principles
Always treat the underlying cause
Mild Hypercalcemia (14 mg/dL or symptomatic)
• IV normal saline hydration
• Loop diuretics (Furosemide) after rehydration
• Calcitonin – rapid but short effect
• Bisphosphonates (Zoledronic acid, Pamidronate)
Important Note
• Loop diuretics → increase calcium excretion
• Thiazide diuretics → increase calcium reabsorption

Iron Deficiency Anemia & Infertility (Male and Female)
Iron deficiency anemia is a very common health problem, especially in women of reproductive age. Unfortunately, many people are unaware that low iron levels can also affect fertility in both men and women.
In Women:
Iron deficiency can disturb normal ovulation and hormonal balance. It may lead to irregular menstrual cycles, poor egg quality, and difficulty in conceiving. Severe anemia can also increase the risk of complications during pregnancy.
In Men:
Low iron levels can affect overall health and energy levels, and may contribute to reduced s***m quality, decreased s***m count, and poor reproductive health.
Common Symptoms of Iron Deficiency Anemia:
• Persistent fatigue and weakness
• Pale skin
• Shortness of breath
• Hair fall
• Headaches or dizziness
What You Can Do:
• Eat iron-rich foods such as spinach, lentils, beans, red meat, eggs, and dates.
• Take iron supplements only after medical advice.
• Get proper medical evaluation if you are planning pregnancy and experiencing fatigue or infertility.
Early diagnosis and proper treatment of iron deficiency anemia can significantly improve reproductive health and increase the chances of conception.
If you are facing symptoms of anemia or difficulty conceiving, consult a doctor for proper evaluation and guidance.
