Sweden has introduced a groundbreaking healthcare initiative by allowing doctors to prescribe travel as part of a patient’s wellness plan — becoming the first country to formally adopt this concept within its national health system.

Under the program, physicians can recommend short, nature-focused trips for patients dealing with stress, burnout, or low mood. Some travel-related expenses are partially covered through public health insurance, making the initiative accessible and inclusive.

The move is supported by strong scientific evidence showing that time spent in nature can lower stress hormones, improve mood, and support emotional recovery. Researchers note that exposure to natural environments significantly reduces cortisol levels, especially in individuals facing chronic stress.

While still in its early stages, the program reflects a broader global shift toward lifestyle-based healthcare — recognizing outdoor activity, mindful travel, and nature exposure as powerful complements to traditional mental health treatment.

My Input on an extremly pertinent topic…Mental health stigma in Pakistan, especially for women, creates major barriers to care. As Dr. Rafia Rafique highlights, derogatory labels like “pagal aurat” fuel shame and silence, discouraging women from seeking help for anxiety and depression.
Many still turn to traditional healers due to cultural myths linking mental illness to supernatural causes, delaying effective treatment.
We must challenge these harmful stereotypes and promote mental health awareness to create safe, supportive spaces where women can seek help without fear or judgment.

I was honoured to serve as keynote speaker at the 2nd National Conference on Social and Behavioural Sciences (NCSBS), which was held at the Lahore School of Behavioural Sciences, University of Lahore, on December 1st, 2025. I delivered the key note on “Digital Minds: Psychology’s Role in an AI-Driven Future,” highlighting psychology’s essential role in guiding ethical AI, safeguarding mental health in the digital era, and leveraging intelligent tools to advance outreach and care. Colleagues and participants joined us at the University of Lahore for important conversations on emerging psychological challenges and innovative solutions.

I appeared on Public TV morning show today to discuss the alarming impact of موسمیاتی تبدیلی اور اسموگ on children’s mental and physical health in Pakistan. Floods, pollution, and smog are creating serious challenges like anxiety, sleep problems, and loss of confidence among our young ones.
It is crucial that Pakistan’s environmental policies urgently address the wellbeing and protection of children, the most vulnerable group facing this growing crisis. Collective and immediate action is needed to safeguard their future.
Let’s continue this important conversation and work together for a healthier, safer environment for all children.
