As nutritional elitists flock to their avocado toasts and frown at the sight of bacon and eggs, calm objectivity tells us that food choices are not competitive nor a fashion statement. In fact, being able to choose the food we eat is a privilege. โฃ

While avocado is rich in micronutrients and fiber, cornerstones of any supportive diet, bacon and eggs also offer nutritional benefits in protein and micronutrients. While evidence shows processed meat should be eaten in moderation, this doesnโt mean you have to ban it altogether.โฃ

Perhaps on occasion, the protein from the bacon will fill you up, thus preventing you from overeating soon after? Maybe you enjoy the taste of bacon? Perhaps you can enjoy both avocado and bacon? Possibly you should be free to make your own food choicesโฆโฃ

There is no doubt that the remaining foods on the left side of my graphics are generally more nutritious and satiating than their counterparts on the right; however, that doesnโt automatically make them a โbetter choiceโโฆโฃ

Our diets also have moving parts. Calories, nutrients, and volume interchange with any given food corpses tens of thousands of food choices across our lives. Therefore itโs impossible that diet quality can be defined through one food choice. โฃ

Suppose you are lucky enough to have the privilege to regularly choose what you eat, rather than letting emotion, ego, or rumor dictate your choice. In that case, the following blueprint will perhaps improve your relationship with food and allow you to understand your food choices better. โฃ

If you have enjoyed a nutritious breakfast and lunch, enjoying a less healthy snack you love (like chocolate) provides a perfect balance. If you havenโt eaten many nutrients all week, perhaps itโs time to have a run of nutrient-dense days. If you have eaten bacon 2 days in a row, possibly switching to avocado provides more balance, and so on.โฃ

Viewing your diet through the lens of the bigger picture is far more useful if you want your nutritional decisions to be effective, supportive, and enjoyable for the rest of your life. ๐โฃ
