As weird as it sounds - her brother in law wanted to marry her, and used to send her obscene texts on mobile phone. The family pressure forced her to visit her sister because of course no one would believe that her brother in law was harassing her offline and online. She stayed quiet in an attempt to save her sister's marital life but one day her brother in law stopped her on her way to university, asked her to go with him and when she refused, he threw acid on her face.
This brave young girl refused to accept this as her fate, she stood up for herself and raised her voice with the help of activists working for acid attack victims. We both were mainly in touch because the perpetrator was constantly blackmailing her, this criminal sent her text messages threatening her to post her doctored pictures on internet if she wouldn't withdraw the case. We both used to talk about the case on and off, and naturally she'd often feel disappointed that her perpetrator was roaming freely but she was never discouraged.
Today after one year and 7 months of pursuing the case, her perpetrator was sentenced with 28 years of imprisonment and 20 lac fine. She had a cosmetic surgery on the day of hearing but she made sure to send me this picture and requested me to let other women and the world know that together we are stronger, and we can fight these battles with solidarity and determination. If you are harassed or blackmailed online please call 0800 39393 we don't claim that complaint will be resolved quickly but together we will find a solution!
More power to you S! (The message and the photo has been posted on her request.
