NUMS || Farewell Lunch-2023 (SSH Batch-1)

As 2023 has arrived, it is time for the very batch of ‘Social Science of Health’ to graduate. To bid them farewell and recall the journey, a Farewell Lunch was organized by the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The event was held at La Sorte Naval Anchorage Club, Islamabad on January 3rd, 2023.

The event was honored by Dr. Arif Mahmud (HoD. Social and Behavioral Sciences) and Dr. Shazia Khalid (HoD. Psychology) and Dr. Azam Chaudhry (Dean Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities) joined as the Chief Guest of the event. Under the supervision of Ms. Salma Ayaz (Lecturer English, DSBS) an event was programmed, along with the lunch, that was well enjoyed both by faculty as well as the students.
The event was hosted by Mariyam Amir and Ain-ul-Fatima (SSH-VII), and Noreen Iqbal (SSH-VI) delivered a speech to formally begin the event. It was followed by a song performance by Ali Haider and Zareena Zulfiqar (SSH-VII) and Enaab Syed (SSH-VII) presented a self-written poem for her graduating fellows. A comic skit and song dedication to teachers were presented by the host semesters of DSBS which humorously reflected the four-year journey of students at NUMS. Titles were given by the junior semester to their senior graduating fellows. Maaz Mughal (SSH-VIII) from the graduating semester took the stage to word his feelings on this happy yet melancholic eve and wished for the fellows to stay in touch even after graduating. A group of eighth-semester students also presented their respect and regard to the faculty members in the form of titles and song dedication. The farewell speech on the behalf of graduating semester was presented by Warda Waheed (SSH-VIII) that extended gratitude to the faculty members for their academic guidance. She appraised the cherished journey at NUMS and highlighted the significance of the degree program, and also thanked the BS psychology students for joining the get-together.

After the program ended, lunch was served, and the students and faculty savored the food well. Dr. Arif Mahmud in his remarks congratulated both the hosts as well as the guest semesters for presenting a memorable show and recalled the memories of the NUMS’ first batch. He also wished the graduating batch success in their future endeavors. Dr. Azam Chaudhary gave his concluding remarks and wished the students success in their future endeavors. He reminisced about the emotional attachment, besides the academic one, with students of the first batch and exhibited his anticipation that the graduating student will accomplish big as the degree has equipped them with unique insights and skills. Furthermore, he appreciated at length the efforts of Ms. Salma Ayaz and the Event management team in organizing a diligent and delightful event. The event concluded as group photos and momentous pictures were taken to preserve the sentiments. The graduation of the first batch of the Social Science of Health is not only a source of pride for the students but the department also feels honored for this accomplishment.

NUMS Anti-Corruption Day

The world is currently facing problems that can threaten the global wealth and stability. The majority of these problems are linked with the menace of prevailing corruption. If the objectives highlighted in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are to be realized, then mitigation of corruption, increase in truthfulness and strengthening of institutions is imperative.
International Anti-corruption day was hosted in NUMS PWD Campus on December 15, 2022 under the guidance of Dr. Shumaila Naz (Assistant Professor, DBS), Dr. Sumra Wajid Abbasi (Assistant Professor, DBS), Ms. Salma Naz Khattak (Lecturer DSBS), Conveners of NUMS Art and Media Society, Drama Club Society, and Debating Society respectively.
Air Commodore Mohammad Ismail, Retd, Director Quality Assurance, graced the event as chief guest. Students from the entire NUMS campus took part in the event while displaying enthusiasm and initiative. Videos prepared by the students about corruption awareness and prevention were shown. Generally, the students manifested full awareness on the social maladies engendered by the scourge of anti-corruption. Three winners were chosen from the videos on anti-corruption presented by the students.
Later on, students from NUMS and AFPGMI engaged in constructive debates on the topics of "Discriminated Education is the reason for Corruption" and "Corruption is the sole cause of country's demise". Skits were also performed by university sstudents, underlining the harms of corrupt practices in the society at large. They also illustrated digital and hand-made banners that called for attention to the growing problem of corruption.
Students who excelled in the competitions received certificates for their efforts and display of creativity. Finally, an awareness walk marked the conclusion of the event.

Daring Not Deprived: Persons with Diabilities

A Community Work Project Anniversary of “Daring Not Deprived “was celebrated by NUMS Civic Society in Collaboration of NUMS Department of Psychology. Since 2020, Ms. Saira Javed (Lecturer Clinical Psychology, NDP/ Incharge Psychologist, N-TRC/ Convener Civic Society) has designed and directed a program for the inclusivity of differently abled person in collaboration of the CEO of Saaya Association of Disabled People Islamabad. The "DND" event was held to recognize the contributions made by the students of the Department of Psychology who are also a part of NUMS Civic Society in highlighting the emerging challenges faced by differently abled individuals and helping them out. It adhered to the SDG 3 for “good health and wellbeing”, SDG 4 “quality education, SDG 8 “decent employment, and economic growth” as well as SDG 17 "Partnerships for the Goals”. DND Journey has been presented by Students from the Department of Psychology. The project representatives from NUMS Civic Society from the Department of Public Health (Public Health Social Worker), Department of Psychology (Mental Health Social Worker) and Department of Allied Health Sciences (Medical Health Social Worker) had presented future plans.

The Chief Guest Mr. Asim Zafar (CEO Saaaya Association) highly acknowledged the efforts of NUMS faculty and students in highlighting the needs of the differently abled individuals and eradicating associated stigma and taboo faced by them. He further shared his personal experiences and elaborated the vision mission of Saaya Association to motivate new members of NUMS Civic Society. Where, Mr. Zafar specifically discussed the sufferings of polio patients, how his has made it possible for people with different impairments to access opportunities where they can reach their full potential and has carried out several wheelchair distributions ceremonies and training sessions for the general public, differently abled people and their families. Lastly, he expressed his gratitude to NUMS for providing a ramp facility for wheelchair individuals. The take home message of the event was that we are all unique in our own capacities, and the only gap between the person and his goal is his willingness to learn. At the end, a cake cutting ceremony took place, appreciation certificates from CEO Saaya association were distributed among Daring not Deprived team members and a souvenir was presented to the Chief.

NUMS || 1st Annual Research Meet Up was organized on 16th & 17th November, 2022 at AFPGMI. Event was the brainchild of Ms. Saba Khurshid (Research Officer) but her dream wore the dress of reality under the umbrella of cooperation provided to her by whole management team of NUMS & AFPGMI. Special thanks to Brig Tashfeen Bin Nazeer (Director Training) who was the Chief Organizer of this event along with team of organizers including Muhammad Waqas Ashraf (Manager NUMS Affairs), Ms Hina Riaz (Assistant Manager NUMS Affairs), Ms Aania Majeed (Manager IT) and our amazing management team of students from BS Allied Health Sciences. Students of Allied Health Sciences & College of Nursing (AFPGMI), Department of Psychology, Biological Sciences & Social Sciences of Health, Human Nutrition & Dietetics (NUMS) presented their ideas in the form of oral and poster presentation. A slew of segments were properly optimized to give the event a fragrance which the attendees will feel for a long time. Dr Sadaf Mumtaz, Professor of Physiology, Head of Department of Physiology, HITEC-Institute of Medical Sciences, Taxila was Session Keynote Speaker who enlightened the students on the importance of Research in contemporary world. Closing ceremony was conducted on 17th Nov, 2022. Chief Guest for closing ceremony was Commandant AFPGMI, Maj General Ahsan Altaf, TI (M). Shields were awarded for best papers and token of appreciation presented to Session Chairs, Co-Chairs and event organizers. 3 x best oral paper shields were awarded to the students as per following details:
