It is the first time the procedure has been successful.

The recipient, a 32-year-old Brazilian woman, has a condition that meant she was born without a womb. She did have ovaries, meaning that eggs could be collected and used in IVF.

Just over a month after the transplant, the woman’s periods started. Six months later, one of her embryos from the IVF treatment was transferred into her new womb. The pregnancy went smoothly and a baby girl was delivered by caesarean section at just over 35 weeks.
