Nasolacrimal Duct Block in Children — Advice

In many infants, the nasolacrimal (tear) duct is not fully open at birth, causing watery eyes or mild discharge. Most cases resolve spontaneously within the first year of life with simple care.

Advice: Crigler Massage Technique

👉 Purpose:
To help open the blocked tear duct by increasing pressure in the lacrimal sac and encouraging drainage into the nose.

How to do Crigler massage:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
2. Locate the lacrimal sac: It lies just below the inner corner of the eye (beside the nose).
3. Use your index finger: Place it gently over that area.
4. Apply firm downward pressure along the side of the nose, toward the nostril.
5. Repeat this movement 5–10 times per session, 3–4 times daily.

Most cases clear by 9–12 months of age; if not, probing may be required.
