„The impossibility of knowing the experience of another person has important implications for the way I talk with my patients. For instance, I try not to tell a patient what he or she is is thinking and feeling for the simple reason that I cannot know this; instead, I try to limit myself to saying only what I think and feel”. Thomas H. Ogden

a Happy New Year 2023!

The passage of time

Eventually, an awareness of time [...] begins with the awareness that good experiences do not go on forever [...]
The passage of time seems to be difficult for all of us to accept and even those who do not believe in an afterlife frequently deny the finality of death and gain comfort from illusions of immortality. [...] non religious versions of such beliefs commonly involve political utopias in which losses are reversed in phantasies of perfect future. [...]
The working through of feelings of dissilusion requires that both the loss of the ideal and the loss of omnipotence associated with it is accepted and mourned. As a result [...] love acquires a new depth.

“An association … carried us another step forward in our understanding of the dream: ‘The tree was a Christmas-tree.’ He now knew that he had dreamt the dream shortly before Christmas and in expectation of it. Since Christmas Day was also his birthday, it now became possible to establish with certainty the date of the dream and of the change in him which proceeded from it. It was immediately before his fourth birthday.

He had gone to sleep, then, in tense expectation of the day which ought to bring him a double quantity of presents. We know that in such circumstances a child may easily anticipate the fulfilment of his wishes. So it was already Christmas in his dream; the content of the dream showed him his Christmas box, the presents which were to be his were hanging on the tree. But instead of presents they had turned into—wolves…”

“Neurosis is the result of a conflict between the ego and its id, whereas psychosis is the analogous outcome of a similar disturbance in the relation between the ego and its environment (outer world).”

"...the principal therapeutic function of a psychoanalyst is to help the patient put into words and conscious thoughts the unconscious feelings and wishful phantasies which preoccupy him. [...] As this becomes more possible the need for the gross distortion of inner and outer functioning, which occurs in narcissistic omnipotent object relations is reduced. The primary means by which the analyst achieves these aims is by precise verbal interpretation of the patient's phantasies of the transference relationship, focusing on the most pressingunconscious anxiety experienced by the patient at any time."
H.Rosenfeld: Impasse and Interpretation (Routledge 1987)

„ For autistic children, language is a form of auto-sensuousness. They can lean or rub themselves against words, but they find it difficult to use them in order to truly communicate. This is why autistic children prefer consonants, which are felt more clearly in the mouth”. Dana Amir
