St. Andrew’s Day - the last magical night before Advent! ✨ For centuries, November 29 in Poland has been a time of fortune-telling, fun, and unusual customs. In the past, these were taken very seriously - young women in particular believed that on this night they could learn the name of their future husband. Today, it’s mainly just good fun, but the magic of St. Andrew’s Day still draws us in.

The city slowly turns white — rooftops, streets, and the quiet corners of alleys disappear under a soft blanket of winter ❄️ Horses steam in the cold air, shopkeepers sweep their doorsteps, and children run out to catch the very first snowflakes. For a moment, time seems to stop — just as it did for our ancestors, who watched winter arrive exactly the same way.

Surnames conceal the stories of our ancestors – often connected to character traits, origins, or roles within their community.
✨ Wilk refers literally to a “wolf” and was often given to someone brave, fierce, or quick — just like the animal.
✨ P***k is an ethnic surname indicating a person of Polish origin or someone strongly identifying with Polish heritage.
✨ Król comes from the word “king” and could describe someone respected, distinguished, or holding an important role in the local community.

👉 Each surname is a fragment of the story of who our ancestors were and how they lived. Perhaps yours hides similar secrets? What surname should appear in the next part?

🇵🇱 November 11th – National Independence Day in Poland.
This is one of the most important days in the Polish calendar – a day on which we commemorate Poland’s return to the map of Europe after 123 years of partition. It is a celebration of courage, perseverance, and love for the homeland ❤️🤍

Today, as we walk the streets dressed in white and red, it is worth thinking about our ancestors who fought for freedom, often risking their lives. Their stories are part of our shared memory and heritage.

🇵🇱 Perhaps there were heroes from that time in your family too? Are you celebrating this Day? Share in the comments.

The beginning of November in Poland is a special time—All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day 💛 Cemeteries are lit up with thousands of lights, and memories of loved ones who have passed away return with renewed strength. These are moments of reflection and contemplation, but also of gratitude for those who came before us.

👉 When we walk among old gravestones, we often think about our ancestors — their lives, their fates, what they left behind. Maybe now is the time to learn their story? Do you celebrite these Days?

Your Roots in Poland

Your Roots in Poland team has been created to deal with complex archival and press queries as well as with virtual data bases within the genealogical industry. All of the issues connected with seeking and interpreting any kind of documentation can be quite tedious to someone who has never dealt with historical documents – especially those written in foreign languages. Therefore, our main goal is to help all those who are looking for their roots in Poland whether it be in regions within the present geographic borders of Poland or in regions that used to be Polish soil.

Finding facts about your ancestors and their relationships, and providing sentimental journeys to the places where your family members used to grow up and live – this is our specialty. We also want to raise awareness of family roots and people who are or were close to us.
