👉Subcutaneous Fat
This is fat stored directly under the skin
Symptoms:
Constant, soft “cushioning” of the body, belly, thighs, hips etc.
Skinfold is thick and soft, easy to pinch with your fingers
No significant day-to-day changes in body volume
Decreases slowly with a calorie deficit and exercise
Can persist even with physical activity if the diet doesn’t support fat loss
Causes:
Caloric surplus
Lack of physical activity
High intake of processed carbohydrates and fats
Low muscle mass
👉Water Retention (Edema)
This is the buildup of fluids in the tissues
not fat
Symptoms:
Swelling in the ankles, hands, face, abdomen
Rapid weight fluctuations
up to 1–3 kg or 2–6 lbs in a single day
A feeling of "bloating"or "heaviness"
Skin feels tight but it’s harder to pinch a fat fold
Marks from socks or fingers (indentations) may stay visible for longer
Common in the second half of the menstrual cycle
Causes:
Excess sodium (salt)
Deficiency of potassium and magnesium
Stress (cortisol)
Lack of sleep
Inactivity e.g.prolonged sitting
Inflammation, medications, or medical conditions e.g.kidney or heart issues
