READ. for Real

READ. for Real Europe really needs reading. 75 million adult Europeans are unable to read with understanding and lack properly developed literacy skills. So Read. For Real!

Reading is the future. European Authors Day will offer celebrations across Europe thanks to the collaboration of an international consortium of seven partners from five countries supported by Creative Europe. The events will be held during November 11th-December 12th each year. Meetings with European Authors travelling from country to country will take place across Europe. Schools, preschools, libraries and bookstores from all around Europe are invited to join in with their creativity and unlimited potential! We want to offer the children and youth the experience of reading REAL books for fun, introducing up-to-date most trendy topics for REAL conversations around books, stimulating pleasure in REAL time around books, treating a conversation with a REAL author or creator as a formative experience - is the vision for : beyond nationality, latitude, political, social, religious or wealth backgrounds. Research proves reading to be a factor for development and innovation, a binder of civilisation, social capital and democracy. The main goal of the project is to make a positive impact on the European reading landscape.

With the celebration, we want to highlight something essential: libraries are wonderful places because of the people who create them.

It is librarians who turn buildings into vibrant cultural spaces. Thanks to them, libraries become places where we meet authors, discover their work, and truly experience literature - not only by reading, but by listening, discussing, and sharing.

Librarians and libraries are also active partners in our project, celebrating and bringing European writers and their stories closer to local communities.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this celebration - your commitment keeps literature alive and meaningful.

Today, we thank people behind the shelves — the librarians who make literature come alive.

Today we celebrate !

A bookmark may be small, but it holds a special role. It keeps our place in stories that inspire us, challenge us, and stay with us long after we close the book.

With the slogan, we celebrate the from 11.11 to 12.12, but we read, for real, every single day! Today is a perfect reminder that literature isn’t just for special occasions; it’s part of our everyday lives. The bookmarks in the photo are part of our project, created to accompany you on your daily reading journey.

An author event can become a true bridge between generations - a powerful reminder that reading is for everyone. People of all ages can be included, and an adult who reads sets a meaningful example for a child. This is how a culture of reading is built. Because is not only about events for children and young people - it is a celebration shared across Europe by readers of every generation, including seniors.

Here are just a few examples of such events organised as part of across Europe:
📖 At the National Library of Moldova Biblioteca Naţională a Republicii Moldova / National Library of Moldova, Ana Blandiana met readers during an intergenerational Authors Tour and conference, reflecting on cultural memory and the moral responsibility of literature.
📖During Reading Week at 51 Elisaveta Bagryana High School 51 СУ „Елисавета Багряна”, leading Bulgarian authors — Georgi Gospodinov Georgi Gospodinov, Zdravka Evtimova, Zahari Karabashliev Zachary Karabashliev, Margarita Petkova, Radostina Nikolova, Victoria Beshliyska, Maria Laleva and Ivo Siromahov Иво Сиромахов / Ivo Siromahov - engaged a diverse audience in vibrant discussions.
📖 In November, the Biblioteka Pedagogiczna w Zamościu Biblioteka Pedagogiczna w Zamościu hosted Monika Tadra, author of Restored to Life, for a moving conversation that especially resonated with older readers.

Together, these moments show that reading connects, inspires and strengthens communities. Join the movement: celebrate stories, share reading experiences, and be part of the next European Authors Day.

Reading aloud to children is one of the simplest and most powerful things we can do as parents or carers📚

Reading together is not just about sharing stories: we’re building language, imagination and connection. Those small daily moments can create lifelong habits 🚸

That’s why we’re encouraging children and young people to celebrate literature as part of the project - because the habit of reading begins in childhood, and grows with us.

Some love stories burn. Some quietly endure. Others teach us that love is as much about growth as it is about passion. This Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating romance in all its forms - the kind that lingers long after the final page since we .

Here are the novels we recommend for every kind of love:

🌹 „Pride and Prejudice” – a love that matures
From first impressions to lasting devotion, Elizabeth and Darcy remind us that real love grows through understanding, humility, and self-reflection.

🔥 „Wuthering Heights” – a love that consumes
Catherine and Heathcliff show us passion at its most intense: wild, destructive and unforgettable.

💔 „The Doll” – a love idealised
A story of longing and illusion, where loving the idea of someone proves more powerful than loving the reality.

✨ „Normal People” – a love shaped by timing
Connell and Marianne’s connection feels achingly real - fragile, intimate, and defined by the things left unsaid.

Love isn’t one story. It’s many: passionate, patient, imperfect, transformative.

is the perfect moment to celebrate literature in creative and engaging ways. Across Europe, schools were showing that reading can be an experience - connecting children with authors, stories, and emotions.

In Bulgaria, Начален етап в 51 СУ welcomed Ivan Radenkov, author of “Zipper Beetle and Button Beetle”. With his guitar, the meeting turned into a joyful musical reading, with students and teachers singing together and children wearing handmade beetle headbands.

Also in Bułgaria ОУ "Никола Й. Вапцаров", град Хасково marked the day with a special Reading Day featuring Maya Dalgacheva Мая Дългъчева - Официална страница, author of “Fairy Tales”. Colourful hats inspired illustrations and creative play, helping children explore stories through art and imagination.

These two examples show how European Authors Day can be celebrated beyond traditional formats by turning reading into an active, joyful, and memorable experience.

We are truly grateful to the cultural attachés of EU Member States who joined and supported celebration of the last fall.

Receiving such warm messages and greetings from a book club of cultural attachés in Brussels is a powerful reminder that literature connects people across borders. Your involvement shows that reading is not only a personal passion, but also a shared European value.

is a pan-European celebration of literature and reading, and initiatives like this prove how important books are in building dialogue, understanding and community. Thank you for being part of this journey and for showing that reading really matters.

❄️This year, winter has finally made its presence felt - just the kind many of us have been missing. When snow outside invites us to stay at home, a book becomes the perfect companion for cold winter days.

With this in mind, we warmly recommend a few titles in which cold and snow play a particularly important role:

📖 Olga Tokarczuk ”Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead”
Winter in the Kłodzko Valley cuts the characters off from the world. Snow, frost and silence heighten the sense of mystery and growing unease.

📖 Stefan Żeromski ”Homeless People”
Winter scenes in Warsaw and the mountains emphasise the characters’ loneliness, moral dilemmas and inner conflict.

📖 Henning Mankell ”Faceless Killers”
The harsh Swedish winter shapes the story’s atmosphere. Snow, frost and darkness intensify tension, highlighting isolation and the chilling reality of crime.

📖 Stieg Larsson ”The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”
The Scandinavian winter - cold, snow and darkness - creates a bleak atmosphere and a strong sense of isolation.

📖 Jo Nesbø ”The Snowman”
The frozen Norwegian landscape and white silence contrast sharply with rising tension, making snow one of the most unsettling ‘characters’ in this dark crime story.

Would you agree that a good book can warm even the coldest day? Or is there a title you’d like to add to our list? Let us know in the comments!
