Puerto Rico’s Community Health Centers (CHCs) continue to deliver consistent, comprehensive, and high-value care despite extraordinary and ongoing challenges. Chronic funding shortfalls, aging infrastructure, severe weather threats, and workforce shortages have pushed these health centers to innovate out of necessity — and they continue to meet rising community needs.
A new report co-authored by Peter Shin, Chief Science Officer, NACHC, Dr. John W. Hatch Center for Science; Darielys Cordero, Executive Director, Asociación de Salud Primaria de Puerto Rico; Roberto Ramirez, Professor (Ret.), Universidad de Puerto Rico - UPR; Paloma Hernandez, Chief Executive Officer, Urban Health Plan, Inc., NACHC Board Chair, highlights how Puerto Rico’s CHCs are adapting, strengthening operations, and finding new ways to serve patients amid constant disruption.
Their experience offers important insights for CHCs across the United States, especially in areas where climate risks, economic pressures, and provider shortages intersect.
