Celebrating Strength and Resilience at the Blind Rehabilitation Center (BRC)

Our BRC proudly welcomed 5 new women Veterans to the program with a special event during Women’s History Month.

Our dedicated team honored the Veterans’ initiation into our unique and inspiring program by presenting them with a meaningful keepsake during the welcome event. At the BRC each Veteran with visual impairment receives an individualized treatment plan and therapeutic instruction is provided on a one-on-one basis.

“If you or someone you know could benefit from our program, we're here to support you on your journey to a brighter future,” said Adriana Mattei, Chief of Blind Rehabilitation Center. If you want to learn more about how you can be part of our Blind Rehabilitation Center, please contact Adriana at adriana.mattei-sosa@va.gov.

More Time for Veterans, Less Typing for Providers

VA Caribbean Healthcare System is introducing ambient artificial intelligence (AI) scribe across VA. Ambient AI scribe is a new tool that securely helps your provider capture notes during your visit — so they can focus on you, not the keyboard. You can expect:

• More one-on-one time with your provider
• Same high-quality VA care — with a focus on what matters most – your health
• Your privacy is always protected, and participation is your choice.

Innovation in health care delivery because our Veterans deserve the very best. To learn more, check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdKzyXTEWNw

What is a Medical Foster Home (MFH)?

Medical Foster Homes are private homes in which a trained caregiver provides services to a few individuals. Some, but not all, residents are Veterans. A Medical Foster Home can serve as an alternative to a nursing home. It may be appropriate for Veterans who require nursing home care but prefer a non-institutional setting with fewer residents.

Are you interested in becoming a Medical Foster Home?
The VA Caribbean Healthcare System coordinator for MFH is Melanie Garcia del Valle. She can be reached at 787-692-7893.

Celebrating the achievements of our Veteran athletes. 🏅

VA Caribbean Healthcare System proudly recognized the Veterans who represented our healthcare system at the 2025 National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Minneapolis.

On behalf of the Executive Director Dr. Antonio Sanchez, Public Affairs Officer Coralys Ruiz Jimenez shared motivational remarks and presented the athletes with a special keepsake photograph featuring their hard-earned medals.

The National Veterans Wheelchair Games is presented each year through a partnership between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), bringing together Veteran athletes from across the country to compete, connect, and inspire.

Our Veteran athletes are already looking ahead to the 2026 National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Detroit, and we encourage other Veterans to explore opportunities through VA Adaptive Sports programs such as the National Veterans Golden Age Games, the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic, and the National Veterans Wheelchair Games.

These events empower Veterans to stay active, build camaraderie, and continue demonstrating the resilience and determination that inspire our entire community.

VA Caribbean Stands Together for Colorectal Cancer Awareness

In recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Associate Director for Patient Care Services Iris Hernández joined members of the VA Caribbean Healthcare System Gastroenterology team to show their support for raising awareness about colorectal cancer prevention and screening.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when detected early through regular screening.

Our dedicated clinical teams continue working every day to educate, guide, and support Veterans in protecting their health through preventive care and timely screenings.

Together, we remain committed to serving those who served — with compassion, excellence, and heart. 💙

Yesterday I told the American Legion- it’s a new day at VA. We’re slashing wait times and making it easier for our women Veterans to get the care they need. The mission is simple - Veterans First. Always.

Our New Mission, Vision, High Reliability Organizational Pillars and Goals | 2019 – 2024

The VA Caribbean Healthcare System’s Strategic Plan is a transformational process and roadmap to guide our efforts towards becoming a High-Reliability Organization (HRO) and incorporating HRO tenants into our culture and service delivery: Leadership Commitment, Safety Culture and Continuous Process Improvement. Our strategic plan will guide us in creating lasting change in how we ultimately serve our Veterans, their families, caregivers, survivors, and our communities. Our driving forces are the Four Statutory Missions of the VA: Healthcare, Education, Research, and Emergency Management.

In addition, we will embrace and incorporate VA Secretary Wilke’s four priorities into our strategic planning process: Customer Service, MISSION Act, the New Electronic Health Record (EHR), and VA Business Systems Transformation. An integral component to our success, past-present-future will be our employee’s engagement. To quote VA Secretary Wilke, “Transformation will be evidenced by an empowered VA workforce ably serving Veterans in the field with world-class customer service and improved Veteran outcomes.” In the coming days, we will also be highlighting the great work of our employees, how leadership is responding to the 2019 All Employee Survey (AES), and how we as a health system translate feedback of our employees into actions and results.

I am looking forward to the future of our VA Caribbean Healthcare System, with the ultimate goals to be the healthcare destination of choice for our Veterans, provide world class customer service and to be the “Best Place to Work” for our employees.

Sincerely,
