A new study published in the journal Brain Communications shows that even a single 𝟮𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆.
In the study, participants rode a stationary bike for 20 minutes. After the session, researchers detected a burst of high frequency brain waves called ripples. These originated in the hippocampus, a key area for memory, and then spread to other regions linked with learning.
Michelle Voss, the study’s lead author, said the findings show that even a single bout of exercise can rapidly alter neural rhythms and brain networks important for memory and cognitive function. This adds to growing evidence that physical activity not only benefits the body but also has immediate effects on the brain’s learning systems.
