JASA-EL EDITOR'S PICK

The acquisition of English /s/ (as in sun) and /ʃ/ (as in ship) is protracted, and for some children, the production of /s/ and /ʃ/ may be particularly difficult. This work shows that spectral peak in mid-frequency range predicts adult ratings of the accuracy of children's sibilant fricatives better than the first spectral moment, plus it allows direct inference to the place of articulation. https://doi.org/10.1121/10.0039497
