In 2011, we welcomed Pedro Alpuim to INL.
Last week, he retired.

For 15 years, Pedro led our 2D Materials and Devices group, but his influence stretched far beyond these walls.

As a professor at Universidade do Minho, he inspired generations of students through his teaching on electronic devices, nanotechnology, and clean-room fabrication.

And just before turning the page, his legacy was recognised by UMinho with the School of Sciences Award for Knowledge Transfer (2025): in honour of the excellence and impact of his research and knowledge transfer activities.

Thank you, Pedro.
For the science, the dedication, and the 15 years you gave us.

May this next chapter be your finest yet.

We've all been there...You leave the house looking pristine, and minutes later, there's a stain on your shirt.

It's a small frustration.

But one that points to a much bigger challenge: how do we make textiles that repel water and stains without harming the planet?

Most hydrophobic fabrics are far from eco-friendly, and that's exactly the problem researchers at INL set out to solve.

They've developed a water-repellent, stain-resistant cotton that is also kind to the environment.

And crucially, their method has real potential for large-scale, environmentally conscious textile production.

Curious about how they did it?

Portuguese research and innovation took an important turn yesterday, and INL was part of it.

In Lisbon, the Portuguese Government presented the framework of the newly created Agência para a Investigação e Inovação (AI²) a landmark step in defining Portugal's national research and innovation priorities.

Representing INL at the event were Deputy Director-General Ado Jorio, Carolina Baptista, Mariana Fernandes, and Laura Rodriguez-Lorenzo.

At INL, we often ask this simple question:
How can science make a difference?

As a founding member of the IAM4EU Partnership, we’re helping Europe lead the way in advanced materials, and bringing science closer to everyday life.

Timing is everything...

Especially when the topic is diagnostics.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely used to detect medical conditions, ranging from tumors to strokes.

INL researchers have shown, in a collaborative work, how magnetic interactions between iron oxide nanoparticles influence MRI contrast.

This new found knowledge could boost the quality of future MRI scans, helping doctors detect diseases earlier and with greater accuracy.

Women hold only 10% of top leadership positions in STEM.

Our Director‑General, Prof. Dr. Clivia Sotomayor, is one of that 1 in 10.

A world‑leading researcher and head of a pioneering nanophononics group, Clivia works to understand how energy moves through materials.

Her research contributes to addressing one of today’s biggest challenges: the growing energy consumption of AI technologies.

But when asked about the proudest moment in her career, despite major scientific breakthroughs, coveted prizes, and even an ERC Advanced Grant, her answer comes without hesitation: supervising young talent.

With her story, and after highlighting 6 talented scientists, we conclude our series certain that:

Science needs more women.

More women in research.
More women in leadership.
More women who inspire generations to come.

Dr Laura Rodriguez is on a mission to protect our water.

Every day, we’re reminded that water sources are growing more polluted and increasingly unsafe to consume.

And every day, Laura puts her lab coat on, determined to change that reality.

She develops miniature chips capable of detecting pollutants and organic contaminants before they become a threat.

Her work helps safeguard public health, protects ecosystems, and the wildlife that depends on them.

But what if she’d never followed science?
What if the next generation doesn’t either?
Science needs Laura, and it need more women like her!

Not every woman in science wears a lab coat or spends her days running experiments. 👩🏻‍🔬

Some make science possible in a completely different way, like Dr. Andrea Gouvêa.

At INL, Andrea is a guiding force behind our Electron Microscopy and X-Rays facility. She trains, supports, and empowers researchers so they can validate their scientific processes with precision.

Thanks to her expertise, ideas turn into evidence.
Hypotheses become breakthroughs.
And science moves forward.

Today, we celebrate her career, and the fact that she chose INL to put her talent to work.

The gender gap in science is still very real.

UNESCO reports that women make up only one‑third of researchers worldwide. 👩🏻‍🔬

Dr. Begoña Espiña is one of them.

As leader of INL’s research group dedicated to water quality and a member of Water Europe’s Expert, she tackles some of the most urgent challenges faced by our aquatic environments.

Begoña rose above the statistics, and because of it science benefits.

But celebrating women in science also means recognising that when inequality persists, innovation stagnates.

Dr. Temple Douglas began researching in high school! 👩🏻‍🔬

Back then, she helped develop a non‑invasive diagnostic tool for Lyme disease.

Today, she’s working to advance the future of cancer diagnostics and therapies, turning curiosity into discoveries that could change lives.

But what if she never pursued science?
How many breakthroughs would be delayed or missed?
How much potential would be lost?

Her story is the perfect reminder of why we celebrate women and girls in science.
