Today marks an important milestone: GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine, Unidade Local de Saúde do Alentejo Central (ULSAC) and Universidade de Évora signed a memorandum of understanding establishing the foundations for the creation of a new Clinical Research Unit at ULSAC. 💜

“With this initiative, we strengthen the objective of GIMM CARE to create a centre of excellence dedicated to clinical research and clinical trials in the Alentejo region. We believe this project may have a catalytic effect on talent retention within the National Health Service and on regional development, through the promotion of biomedical research,” says Fausto Lopo de Carvalho, Executive Board Member of GIMM, adding: “By creating a clinical research hub, to be integrated in the future Hospital Universitário de Évora, the GIMM aims to contribute to an innovation ecosystem capable of attracting national and international funding for high-impact clinical research.”

Following the signing of the memorandum, a brief visit was made to the construction site of the Novo Hospital Central do Alentejo (NHCA), in Évora.

This project is part of the GIMM CARE programme and is funded by the European Union's Teaming for Excellence programme.

Hoje assinala-se um marco importante: a Fundação GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine, a Unidade Local de Saúde do Alentejo Central (ULSAC) e a Universidade de Évora assinaram um memorando de entendimento que estabelece as bases para a criação de uma nova Unidade de Investigação Clínica na ULSAC. 💜

“Com esta iniciativa, reforçamos o objetivo do GIMM CARE de criar um centro de excelência dedicado à investigação clínica e aos ensaios clínicos na região do Alentejo. Acreditamos que este projeto poderá ter um efeito catalisador na retenção de talento no SNS e no desenvolvimento regional, através da promoção da investigação biomédica”, afirma Fausto Lopo de Carvalho, Administrador Executivo da Fundação GIMM, sublinhando: “Ao criar um polo de investigação clínica, futuramente integrado no novo Hospital Universitário de Évora, o GIMM pretende contribuir para um ecossistema de inovação capaz de atrair financiamento nacional e internacional para investigação clínica de elevado impacto”.

Após a assinatura do memorando, realizou-se uma breve visita à obra do Novo Hospital Central do Alentejo (NHCA), em Évora.

Este projeto está integrado no programa GIMM CARE e é financiado pelo programa Teaming for Excellence da União Europeia.

In collaboration with the ESA - European Space Agency and MEDES – Institute for Space Medicine and Physiology , we have received the final shipment, completing a total of three batches of samples destined for space research. All samples are now safely stored at the GIMM Biobank! 🚀💜

Município de Lousada granted the Dr. Mário Fonseca Award to Andreia Mósca and Miguel Prudêncio’s Lab, with the goal of promoting scientific research and recognizing its benefits and impact on society, particularly on the population of Lousada. 👏

This award aims to support the uncovering of how gammaherpesviruses shape malaria parasite liver-stage infection and vaccine-induced immunity, to understand whether the virus alters the immune response or if coinfections affect the severity of the disease.

O Município de Lousada atribuiu o Prémio Dr. Mário Fonseca a Andreia Mósca e ao laboratório de Miguel Prudêncio, com o objetivo de promover a investigação científica e reconhecer os seus benefícios e impacto na sociedade, particularmente na população de Lousada. 👏

Este prémio pretende apoiar o estudo de como o gammaherpesvírus influencia a infeção do parasita da malária na fase hepática e a imunidade induzida por vacinas, para compreender se o vírus altera a resposta imunitária ou se coinfeções afetam a gravidade da doença.
